Dudes Playing Acoustic Guitars at Parties

Based off this contention here:

http://www.thebore.com/forum/index.php?topic=42407.msg2007441#msg2007441

Depends on the song, I guess.

I know that antisocial nerds who go to one party every three years or so and probably stand in the corner casting creepy glances at girls across the room might be opposed to a decent guitar jam. Cool people can dig it. End of story.

At least you guys get people playing something interesting. Here in Ohio the top 5 guitar songs played at a party are as follows

1) Stairway to Heaven
2) Stairway to Heaven
3) Stairway to Heaven
4) Stairway to Heaven
5) Dave Matthews shit

A good friend of mine always brings his acoustic guitar to his cabin and plays it around the fire at night. That's the only time I'm kinda ok with it, but then it still gets old fast.

public acoustic guitar noodling is for honors dorm stairwells, wannabe "dive" coffee joints, and street corners in gentrified urban strip malls.

gtfo with that cackery when human beings come together to get to' up from the flo' up

edit: last time i was at a party where someone started to strum an acoustic guitar, the song was "moonshadow" by cat stevens, AND THE TWEEBERT MOTHERFUCKER SANG ALONG. we shoulda killed the dude right then and there. i consider it a lapse of basic reason that we didn't. frankly, i blame democrats.

The survey hasn't even defined the parameters of guitar playing at parties.

Like, are we talking about all parties? So a party at a huge house with a big backyard to accommodate a full multi-instrument jam session is exactly the same as a tiny little apartment? How long does the playing go on? Does the player interrupt everyone to introduce the song? Is the guitar being played in the middle of the room, or in a corner somewhere? What kind of party is it? Who is playing, a resident/guest of honor, or some random dude who came along as a friend of a friend of a friend? Was the guitar already there at the house, or did someone bring it?

Without these details, this study isn't anything more than a Gallup poll with a really flawed demographic sampling.

Do you bring the guitar inside with you initially, or do you leave it in the car, hoping to worm it into conversation?

That would be the case, but everyone I've ever heard was in the painful learning phase where they don't even really know a complete song, just a bunch of "check out this cool riff...a dozen times in a row"

The best is when there are 3 or 4 guitars out and nothing gets played because they all don't know the same songs. Well, you will probably hear 'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd.

I'm easily the most experienced guitar player here so please understand,  it's never ok to play at a party. No exceptions.  No parameters.  No nothing.

If you're bad or mediocre you shouldn't be inflicting your playing on anyone,  if you're good you should have enough self respect to only play in venues where people can pay you attention.  No exceptions.

I really wish you'd cut the "I'm the only real musician here" ego trip. No one cares that you were some classical prodigy as a teenager. You're like the titular character from the song Glory Days at some point.

WEIRD fucking night.

Instead of going to that dumb fucking biotch's friend's party early on, I took my guitar and went to a jam session that a downtown cafe was hosting. They played a lot of new-age sounding stuff, which was really out of my comfort zone (I mainly play rock and blues), but eventually I figured out what notes to play and actually got some pretty mean solos in there.

Later, I was walking to the bars to try to find that dumb fucking biotch's friend's party, and some girl said hi to me. Turns out she had been at the jam session and really enjoyed my playing. They were going to the corner store to get some soju, and she invited me to come with.

I thought about trying to kino her, but there wasn't really an opportunity, since we were walking and I was carrying my guitar.

After we got our drinks, we all started walking to the bars. A car came driving down the street (there are no sidewalks), and I kind of brushed up against her out of necessity, but I let it linger for a few seconds.

Suddenly she increased her walking speed and didn't even seem to care that I was no longer beside her. I knew exactly what was up, so I basically said fuck it and took a different turn and never saw her again for the rest of the night. Actually, I did see her once, but neither of us gave the other the time of day. That was WEIRD. If a girl isn't interested, she should learn how to convey that without making the dude feel awful.

In the past this might have ruined my night, but I said fuck it and started drinking. Then I met a dude who had also been at the jam session. We both busted out our guitars and started jamming in the street. At one point, we had a crowd of like 20 people singing along to Under the Bridge. It was amazing. Towards the end, some girl came up to me and asked if I knew how to play Crash by DMB. It just so happens that I do know how to play that song. So I played it for her, and she just kinda melted, and I took her home and tapped that.

Weird night, but satisfying overall.

I went to a  'theatre kid' party where it worked. But you had a bunch of different rooms in the house where unusual stuff was popping off (improv, re-enacting scenes from RHPS, tabletop gaming, french film room, ironic spin the bottle/truth or dare game). I was 19 and dating an older girl (22) that took me to the party. I felt so out of place and young.
