One of the absolute best fantasy writers ever.

66 is just way too young to die from Alzheimer's, man. :tocry

Alzheimer's yall. If i get that diagnosis I'm turning in my test without answering all the questions.

My grandma has it

But she still knows me :)

She is in her 80's

Horrible disease to witness first hand

I don't think I'm familiar with his work. What's his best and where should I start?

R.I.P.
Oh man. All of Discworld basically. I haven't read the majority of them (41 books now) but I absolutely love Small Gods. It is more disconnected from the other storylines so easier to recommend.

R.I.P.

There are several different main storylines with overlapping characters within the Discworld series. The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic are a good place to start, after that a lot of people like Guards! Guards!

Small Gods, really.  Then The Watch series in chronological order from Guards! Guards!

Small Gods will tell you if you want to read more, Guards Guards will lead you through the best "series" within Discworld

You didn't read Bob Avarkian's latest classic, Away with All Gods!: Unchaining the Mind and Radically Changing the World?

RIP :(

Alzheimer fucking sucks.

True shit though, the moment I read this thread, it took me sec to differentiate him from Terry Goodkind.

everything but: equal rites, pyramids!, sourcery, and (arguably) color of magic/the light fantastic. the first three are pretty sloppy and lazy; the latter two are his first discworld books where he was trying too hard to be "fantasy" douglas adams.

mort is a love it or hate it book; i hated it, but it was pretty polished and original for one of his early books.

given how prolific he was -- 70+ books in 66 years of life -- he has a remarkable lack of klunkers.

Equal Rites is really bad but the rest of the Witch stuff is good to really good depending on how much you know or like of the following; Shakespeare / musicals / vampire lore.  I could probably talk about Pratchett all day.  I have read all of his books and many of them more than 5 times.  One of my favorite things about visithing Hong Kong was happening on a tiny English language bookstore and finding Pratchett books in English which were not at that time available in the US.

i loved the Rincewind books at first but upon a more recent rexamination, they're probably my least favorite, but i think that's because he has less to say with them that the read more like parodies (explicitly in Colour of Magic) or travelogues (The Last Continent).

I think my personal favorites are probably the Moist Von Lipwig books which are essentially Terry Pratchett playing Park and Rec by laying out good governance with a healthy dose of human optimism.

Also good:

In retrospect, the City Watch books were probably my favorite of the Discworld series.

Are Terry Pratchet's SRS BSNS books that he collaborated on with Stephen Baxter any good?

Terry Goodkind.

Confusing the two :ufup

Terry Pratchett is a good author, Terry Goodkind is a randroid who looks like this:

How has this not been made into an emoticon yet?

I don't know whether or not to be sad that he passed, or happy that he didn't have to deal with the insidious, incessant, and horrifying lack of faculties accompanying Alzheimer's. I'll go with sad, I guess.

Another huge loss for the fantasty/sf community.

Terry Goodkind.

As much as I'm happy to dump on Goodkind, let's not shit up Pratchett's memorial thread with this filth.

Never read a Terry Pratchett book even though every says if you love Douglas Adams you should read Terry Pratchett. I'll get around to it someday.
