Fucking Bobby Kotick and those god-damned Skylanders.

Pretty soon Disney realized they had some IP which was fitting for toys, and they had a great developer in Avalanche from the truly underrated Toy Story 3 game, so bang-zoom, they made Infinity.

Nintendo was smart enough to integrate the basic hardware for Amiibo reading into the Wii-U and new 3DS, but it’s just about the only thing they’ve got right lately.

Bandai/Namco in Japan has just leapt on the train with a Kamen Rider series which brings all the riders together. The figures are crap, the game... well, it’s Bandai/Namco, so don’t get your hopes up.

And, as of this morning, I see the guy from Talk Soup and Community is in the advertisement for a game which apparently is based off The Lego Movie property, called Dimensions. New character inclusions are from The Wizard of Oz, Back to the Future, and Lord of the Rings, for a start.
http://www.lego.com/dimensions/

Ironically, I had just gained some ground with my son by pointing out how the Lego games unlocked dozens of characters without requiring that a figure be seated on the base. The look of shock and betrayal at being manipulated by marketing was precious to me. Now I’ll have to find a new explanation.

Anyone else here buying these things?

It’s also an interesting move; it’s clearly the evolution of Guitar Hero to me, as you can only sell so many plastic guitar controllers, but figures are another thing entirely.

At least the Disney figures are well executed, and it has a seriously deep world-building component as well. My son spends most of his time building stuff, so I love that. Why he wants SO MANY FIGURES is a mystery to me, since he basically outfits them all with the stretchy hand or jetpack, eliminating any unique powers they might possess.

the concept itself isn't anything new; we had plenty of toys that came with a puzzle piece/comic pages/action figure piece/whatever, but obviously going digital takes it to a whole nother level. I woulda got three full-time jobs at age eight to get the whole collection if they had a nes game like this back in the day.

I think Infinity broke my kids on these games. It was so dull they never want to touch another one again. They quit playing Skylanders too. I sold it all.

My kid isn't old enough for this yet, thankfully.

I'd buy a Gundam version if it existed...

Infinity actually has gameplay but there is no need to ever reach a level of nuance in gameplay, so it lays undiscovered. 2.0 explores it more with character skill trees, which largely provide a sub-goal and prevent new skills from being introduced at an overwhelming rate.

My son saw the DIMENSIONS trailer today and was largely uninterested. Yay!

The whole concept is gross really, but not any different from shit I collected as a kid I guess.

I should take a picture of all the skylander and disney infinity crap we have over at the house.  It's ridiculous.  The crazy thing is, the boys will drive us crazy for another figure or box set and then they barely play with them. They keep going back to minecraft.

We have every skylander game and have both of the disney infinity ones but I've only barely played the first skylander one and never even touched any of the others.

Probably I should be grateful that my son hasn't manifested an interest in anything other than Infinity.

But he's also been more into the iOS port of Minecraft than any other game recently, and he recently informed me that there are a ton of exploits but they are only available in certain versions of the game. 10 years old, pretty sure I was not raiding YouTube for tips on how to exploit my favorite game.

That’s kinda how I felt, but I think I’ll stick with actual Lego bricks and try finishing up any of the half-dozen unfinished Travelers Tales Lego games I have between PS3 and 360.  :-\

It was Lego Dimensions which caused me to make this thread. I'm really torn. It also leaves me wondering how many of the new licenses will show up. I mean, the BTTF DeLorean was a MOC from that CUSOO site, it doesn't have Minifigs for Doc and Marty, and I'd never seen Wizard of Oz Lego before, so I'm assuming those are new.

Warner Bros. has the license for the games, so I guess any media they own is open for the game, as long as Lego corporate signs off on it.

I think it’s an auto-yup for me, esp. since my son has been enjoying live-action Star Wars recently.

Disney has made the boldest cash-grab so far with this, by including ONLY Clone Wars’ CG series Anakin and Ahsoka as default.

Infinity 1.0 - Sully, Mr. Incredible, Jack Sparrow

Infinity 2.0  - Avengers - Iron Man, Black Widow (the amount of marketing research which went into determining including the only female character as a pack-in vs. a sell-up must have been impressive)

Infinity 3.0 - break it down:
Devs: “Let’s do the original trilogy characters!”
Marketing: “NO!”
Devs: “Let’s do the Prequels!”
Marketing: “NO!”
Devs: “What, then, SW: REBELS?”
Marketing: “NO! Use that older show that’s been off the air! What was it?”
Devs: “The Clone Wars?”
Marketing: “That’s the one!”

Jesus.

OT characters are on the box (Leia, Tauntan), though.

edit: Oh, default.

Yeah, I knew they were coming. It's just a matter of how much money are they going to try and milk from this thing. Who wants to play as Luke, Han Solo, or Princess Leia? Well, that's another $13 per figure.

Phrases such as “Disney bought my childhood!” and “Our bench is deep, bro” being bandied about without irony.

Also, it’s noted that they’ll start with the prequels and move on from there (with a wink), and if this means DLC in addition to figure purchases, someone’s getting dickpunched.

PC version of Infinity 3.0 is "free" - not sure if this means "just buy the figures," or if it's free like the iOS version, in which characters are re-purchased.

As a LEGO Stan I thought I'd be all over Dimension but the prices are so abhorrent that I can't convince myself to do it.

I'm just unwilling to even start. I love Lego toys, I kinda like the Lego games, but they are really stagnant. I can't imagine that glueing an actual Lego minifig to a base and limiting the number of characters ever available to play will improve the situation.

Target has Disney Infinity 3.0 for $39.99 this week. Thought about getting it, but then realized I'd also want the two Star Wars expansions and the Inside Out expansion for my daughter. A $40 game just became a $115 game.

Nope.

Lookit that wisdom. It just roils off you in curls.

I'm probably $200 or more into Infinity now. I like it, but it's not $200-worth-of-like.

Gamestop had a sale on Saturday where it was deep discounts on anything other than the Star Wars figures. I think lots of surplus inventory needs to be cleared after the holidays.

I got that impression with the base game getting slashed. I can't remember the last time I went in a Gamestop so I didn't know about that sale, and I haven't seen the figures/playsets discounted anywhere.

The figures and base units are on sale at Fred Meyer as well, and Hastings has Buy One Get 50% Off Second; I ended up getting VENOM as a o-miyage for my son. (Don't tell him!)

The Star Wars hype is strong, and I'm tempted to get something from REBELS, but I'm going to cool those particular Ion Engines.

Picked up an Apple TV that plays games. Disney Infinity 3.0 is also on this, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

There is a BlueTooth base for it, but I didn't know about that. I assumed I'd be able to play it with characters I've got registered to my Disney account from having the main game. That's how the other platforms managed it, such as ToyBox 2.0 for iOS and Win8.

It turns out there /is/ an option to play digitally (no base) but it's IAP driven. It may or may not allow me to use my registered characters, but I can't find out because after waiting ½ an hour for the content to completely download, it tells me the Disney Account Server is not available.

I didn't know Disney is spelled with a silent "L."

Update: Disney's servers are finally active. It does not allow characters associated with the account from other platforms to be used. It's all IAP-driven, unless I also have the BlueTooth base. The figures and disks are platform agnostic, but not having the BT base relegates me to IAP. Disappointing but not surprising.

The content streaming feature of AppleTV does not make a good showing on my Mom's satellite-delivered internet. When it finally finished loading, it ran through the same intro scenario as on 360. With a few framerate problems here and there, the game looks about the same as its 360 version, which is impressive, considering how tiny and cheap the AppleTV hardware is. I guess a fair point could be made about Sony PlaystationTV or VitaTV or whatever it's called. But I don't own one.

The game is unplayable with the Siri Remote. I mean, it might be playable, but there are no onscreen cues to tell how to reorient the camera, and there are absolutely no controller cues when the game switches to its race mode; the game mentions how to accelerate, but not that the steering model has moved from the touch-pad to the actual orientation of the Siri Remote. It also doesn't mention how to reverse once the player drives into a wall, which I spent a lot of time doing.

I know it's a port, but it's a half-assed effort in terms of making AppleTV controls work with what ships in the base unit. Really sad.

They're saying it'll be like Dreamcast's Powerstone, and it's being co-developed by United Front Games... you know, the guys who did Sleeping Dogs and is mainly comprised of ex-BULLY developers.

As of 3.0, they launched a digital download version of the game for $30, I grabbed it on sale for $15. There are also starter Playsets which are the figures and Playset node without the software, IIRC.

Best Buy is running a really good sale on Disney Infinity figures,  just $5.00 (or $4 if you have Gamer Club unlocked) for figures like Hulkbuster, Ultron, Darth Maul, the two Tron characters, and all the characters from the Star Wars Rebels tv show.

Toys R Us also has a sale going where if you buy one figure at their regular price of $15, you can get a second figure for just $1 that applies to Disney Infinity, Lego Dimension, and Skyander figures

Dunno if this is the place but I wanted to confess that as of today I now own an Amiibo.

I also sprang for a case because I'm a mad person.

Hyped for Mother 3 US this year. Lucas is precious and must be protected at all costs.

(Villager would have probably been my first if they didn't sell out so fast and became so expensive.)
