THANK YOU! been kind of annoyed with this whole "this is not a mad max movie" complaint/observation from people who've never watched a Mad Max movie before.
It's like the whole essence of the character, he's a wanderer with "no purpose", who in his travels gets into some local affair that he can't leave behind for whatever reason including his comparatively high morals/character until the task is done and then he can't stay because of who he is.

They're really just classic Western tropes set in an apocalyptic future. With a lot more large scale action.

Also how with each film he gets pushed further and further into that classic western/samurai flilm mythical figure status. Mostly silent and near unstoppable. More spirit than man. With this film even his name gets pushed out.

In Beyond Thunderdome, he's literally introduced into the Thunderdome as "The man with no name"

Saw it last night and loved it. It felt like a spiritual successor to The Warriors, where the protagonists have to run a gauntlet through a bunch of crazed people trying to kill them. But as they run that gauntlet everything is falling apart. That aspect keeps the tension high until the very end.

If it was just a movie about that, it would have been enough. But they layered on amazing stunts, memorable characters and small design touches that kept you fascinated even as they took the pedal off the gas for a few minutes.

Every time they cut to black, you could audibly hear my audience exhale.

"Who killed the world?"

I love that line in the movie. It's one of the first times a character looks past their nose and asks a question bigger than their own immediate survival.

I wonder if future Mad Max movies will ever seek that answer? I almost don't want them to, because I know I'll probably end up disappointed with the answer. I think I prefer the idea of the world just slowly going mad.

From context, my assumption was the answer is simply "men." Men killed the world, as there simply were not enough women in positions of power; they were not allowed into positions which could have affected change.

More specifically, the world was killed by warmongers, corrupt capitalists, and religious zealots [represented in the post-apocalyptic world by the Bullet Farmer, the People Eater, and Immortan Joe].

Saw it.  Liked it.

Not in love with it (although fuck yes flamethrower guitar).

Kind of think the plot works better with a much older Max, long long after the nebulous historical apocalypse.  That city and setup looked much too old, especially with Furiosa being a kid living in a "clan" in "the green place" when Max in his 20s was driving around an Australia full of grass and trees as a cop.  And they had hospitals, nightclubs, etc...

I mean the plot seems to demand a Fallout type of delay between the apocalypse and the events in the film, or at least many many decades.

Miller could have framed the movie as a story retold (like he did in Road Warrior). But that is just "Hollywood fat" if you think about it.  It doesn't really make the movie better, it just helps contextualize the movie for nerds that care about timelines and 'canon' and shit like that.

I do want a series to have a continuous story that makes sense if it's going to have the same protagonist.

When each story is throw away, then that is also, logically, how I am inclined to treat it.

You must hate comics

Don't know why you'd say that.

Comic book readers can be the most pedantic consumers of entertainment when it comes to continuity and canon.

DC reboots itself so much everything is throw-away.  Marvel is combining its various realities such that now arguably more things are canon than before...

Or are you referring to crossovers and cross-title characters where was impossible to piece together how Wolverine was in so many places at approximately the same time?

To be fair, we don't know if it's the same Max. It could very well be that old Max is dead and gave the new Max Interceptor and the title "Max".

It certainly fits with western tropes.

Mad Max in general is a wanderer. He's essentially a continuation of a character made famous by old Samurai movies. He's kind of a myth that exists in the world. He arrives, gets wrapped into someone else's struggles and by the end he becomes invested enough to help. We've discussed this earlier.

In the end calling this a continuation or a reboot is sort of dumb. It's just another installment. The first movie is strange in the sense that it's the kind of prequel that usually shows up later to explain how a character became what he is but this time it's the first installment. It sets up who Mad Max is and then every movie after is essentially his adventures. You don't need more context than this world is fucked, Mad Max is a badass survivor in it who will sometimes help for the greater good. That style is perfect for the series, and what I honestly prefer over something that's bogged down by what was done before. It makes new installments not only easier to do but gives it more space to do more creative and different things. No style is inherently better than the other, just different. But too much has focused on canon for me to see a different approach as negative.

If you wanted canon and continuity. Well you watched the wrong movie.

Seriously. Mad Max is not about canon or continuity.

Continuing with what Wrath talked about, just use Yojimbo and Sanjuro as examples. They're the same character, but the timeline, and all that doesn't fucking matter. What matters are the constants: man gets involved in situation that has nothing to do with him, gets involved because he feels honor bound and wants to help, leaves like a badass. In Sanjuro, I think he doesn't even tell them his name, or if he does, it's a totally different name than was in Yojimbo.

This continues in movies like the Dollars trilogy. Timelines and canon are beside the point. What matters are the constants (Max goes from town to town and gets involved with various situations, does some good, leaves) and the themes within.

If the first Leone movie with "Blondie" had been set in colonial America, then a 4th one during the Civil War that's supposed to be centered on the same guy wouldn't make much sense.

You could certainly adapt or remake the story and take it to a different time and place... which is what Leone did do with Fistful... adapt Yojimbo.

Do you really need to have everything explicitly explained to you everytime you watch a new movie in a series made famous with car crashes and action, Jaydubya?

You've definitely found a negative in the movie that I find strange. Almost as strange as the so called feminist agenda of the movie. Guess I'll just stop with saying you watched the wrong movie for what you're looking for.

It's not a matter of "not explaining everything."  It's a matter of the exposition we get not gelling very well with preceding events.

That's bad writing, and it causes a break in suspension of disbelief.

It's not like I am saying the movie sucked or something.  I am saying I found that aspect jarring.

I liked Mad Max.  So I watched a movie called Mad Max: Fury Road.  What was the error in that exactly?

And it was, by and large, a good movie.

It feels, to me, like they wrote this with Mel in mind then recast young and just left things that would have only made sense with an old Max.

sometimes things like that are just dressing. I'm not sure it'd actually improve the movie in any way. the movie literally opens up with max eating a two headed lizard and then going on a badass car chase, right from the beginning. The movie is even called Fury Road. It's a literal and figurative road, from beginning to end. Extra stuff like what you're asking for doesn't add to the plot, characters, or anything. It's just window dressing, and Mad Max Fury Road's minimalism is a part of the appeal and mystique. It gives the setting and timeline an air of mystery, just like the titular character in Mad Max.

What "extra stuff" am I asking for?

If I need to be explicit so you understand my point, Furiosa being part of this "clan" of women from a mythical "green place" and being abducted from said clan / location as a kid doesn't make sense unless Max is at least so much older than Furiosa that she would have been a little kid right after the apocalypse.

It would be more believable the younger Furiosa was and the older Max was.

Again... lots of trees and grass in Australia in the first movie.  Grass is mythical ten years later???

The soundtrack in this movie is straight fire. Straight fucking fire. The sound in general is top fucking shelf, and this movie needs to win all the sound Oscars (along with the obvious visual wins).

I don't think you're getting it.  I wouldn't mind at all if Furiosa had been the only main character in a world similar to or the exact same but many years after Max was dead, or perhaps with a very old Max.

It's only when her backstory is somehow supposed to coexist with his and in the same timeframe and they're roughly the same age that things get very watdog.gif.

I get that you guys are saying not to think that hard about the story, but that's what one does for bad action movies that you're only watching for visual spectacle (or aaa video games with amazing graphics and awful story).

Took my mother to see it today. She didn't want to see it as she didn't care about the previous films. Yet, I kept urging her to see it since it really is a fantastic movie.

She really liked it.

Man, this movie just tossed exposition in the bushes.  I'm not sure whether it's showing faith in the audience to figure shit out, or counting on people being able to enjoy the action regardless of how much they understand, but either way I liked it.

Miller talked of wanting audiences who don't know the language to still understand and enjoy it without subtitles

What's great is that you still feel like you get to know the characters a lot better than you do in some action films that are much more exposition-heavy (like anything in the Transformers series).

It frustrates the absolute shit out of me when people say this movie has no story.
