Had a unique interaction with my kid this weekend. I found out he's been watching movies on an app called Popcorn time (now through his browser). So, I warn him about the dangers of downloading shit, how it's filled with malware, the quality is garbage and I'd much rather just buy the movie for him if he wants it so badly. Basic scare tactics to slow his roll.

My urge was to forbid him from it, but I realize that he's going to do it anyways. I'm not going to be hyper-vigilient every time he uses a computer. Also, I was about his age when I first started dipping my toes into piracy on the C-64. Not to mention the dozens of emulated games I've downloaded for him over the years.

Seems tricky ..

How old is he?

We use parental control and the kids aren't allowed to install anything (except Minecraft mods). At the moment we have more games than there is time to play and it won't be a problem until they are much older. I have a large collection of games that they are welcome to play. If they want something else they can ask for it for their birthday or Christmas. They also have allowances if they want to pay for a game themselves.

I pirated loads of games when I was younger. If you're tech savvy enough to crack games then you also likely know how to avoid trouble from the authorities.

Why not pretend like the feds are going to throw you in jail? Call from another number with a muffled voice and  tell your son you're with the FBI and a warrant has been issued for dad's arrest due to piracy.

He's 10.

Yea, putting installation restrictions should do the trick.

Your 10 year old figured out popcorn time on his own?

Tell him it's stupid to use streaming sites, he sounds smart enough to get away with it.

Its good advice to tell them the dangers of piracy, not so much the RIAA/MPAA coming down on you, but how you can ruin your device pretty damn easy with your cam-footage rip of Taken 3.

Past that, gawrsh... I dunno. Dinosaur me would have been copying VHS tapes at his age.

Educate them about private trackers and the importance of a good ratio and seeding.

Also give him a gentle hug and tell him all will be OK when the piratebay goes down.  It will come back.

So, I warn him about the dangers of downloading shit, how it's filled with malware, the quality is garbage

So you lied to him...

I'm not a parent so I'd probably take this stuff a lot more seriously if I was.

I guess for me I would just be honest. I would tell him the reason why he shouldn't download that stuff is because the companies can track that stuff with ip's and there is an outside chance daddy could get sued or get his internet service cancelled.

Then I would probably show him any of the streaming apps like movie box/showbox, cartoon hd, kodi, hdcinema, or streaming websites and explain why these aren't technically illegal in the same way at least yet. Then follow that up with a philosophical talk about how we need to balance the stuff we leech with the stuff we buy otherwise those people can't make the stuff.

That's how I would be in my ideal world.

In reality I'd probably tell him to stop downloading shit before we lose the house you little bitch!

Or maybe just get him a netflix/amazon prime account and say this is the only way I want you to stream content while you are in my house. Legally. Although kids gonna kid.

Get him an invite to a private tracker and install a bittorrent client. I got an invite to a private tracker if you need one, but tell that nicca he better keep his ratio clean.

Lol, what will I be able to say? I assume my kid will be way more smart/savvy about tech than I will by that time.

"Careful terrenting that vidyacon Araxthamus, don't want to get malware on your computer!"
"SHUT UP DAD IT'S NOT A TORRENT IT'S A CLOUDSTREAM, AND WE DON'T HAVE COMPUTERS WE HAVE NEURAL IMPLANTS, GOD YOU'RE SO GAY"

Best to just talk to him frankly and that includes the impending porn talk.

If he can figure out torrents than he probably knows how to delete his Internet history (and teenage boys will find porn). I grew up with a brother of the same age so I could pretend I don't know what xvideos is after my dad installed a tracker but it's so much better for him if you just talk to him now and try not to seem judgemental about his entertainment choices.

I went to my parent's pad right?
Checked my little brother's computer (the family computer basically) to print some shit out on fandango.

I built this motherfucking computer so he could play games, it was the dope computer I would have wanted entering high school.
It's been a year or two since I built it and the moment I booted it up I was like awww fucc nah  >:(

The fuccc is this shit bruh? I told your ass to take care of it, you do nothing but spend all day on this piece of shit how do you let this happen.
Got the HDD, literally threw it in the trash, bought a new one. Locked it down with non-administrator so he can't install shit I can't authorize.

fuck all that shit
pause
