In 2006, Jim Bob told police that in July, 2002 Josh admitted to fondling a minor’s breasts while she slept. “James said that they disciplined (redacted, Josh) after this incident.” The family did not alert authorities.

He said the program was a “Christian program.” Michelle Duggar later admitted to police that Josh did not receive counseling and instead had been sent during that time to a family friend who was in the home remodeling business.

I've mentioned this before, but a teacher at the Baptist private school I played basketball for in middle/high school was caught having an affair with a student. She was around 18 when it was discovered but it more than likely began when she was underage. The girl was exiled from the school and church before she could graduate. Meanwhile the teacher lost his job but was brought back to do odd jobs (yard/construction work, refereed some of our games lol, etc)...before being reinstated as a teacher (science/biology).

The most popular homeschool curriculum tends to be A Beka Books and Bob Jones stuff. Even with counseling child molesters have a high recidivism rate, and like PD noted on the last page the only counseling this dude got was a stern talking-to by a pedophile.

But assuming this matter was entirely contained to episodes at ages 14~15, there has been some severe neglect, and aiding and abetting involved in this case. Everything from keeping the whole affair on the downlow to the police purging their documents on the case.

It's understandable why any family would want to protect their kid no matter what crime they committed. I don't know if a 17 year old would get on the registry but he certainly knew what he was doing was wrong. Very very wrong.

IMO it was worse that the first part of their curriculum on sexual assault is to suggest the girl could have prevented it or (if they really weren't at fault) that they'll more or less end up closer to God anyways.

Well, ANY system that punishes child molestation is going to create incentives for people to cover up their own crimes and possibly aid and abet loved ones. Pretty sure that juvenile offenders can avoid or be removed from the registry system, though I couldn't say what Josh Duggar's prospects would have specifically been in this case.

While it's understandable that parents might try to keep their child out of a draconian legal system, the expectation that everyone would be cool with them treating this as a "family matter" and getting to choose whether the police would get involved is the definition of privilege that us SJW's keep harping on about. Plus the fact that they were putting several of their other children at risk makes them seem less like rationally protective parents, and more like dangerously self-deluding zealots.

The U.S. has very poor systems for dealing with situations like this, IMO. The framework creates perverse incentives.

A lawyer can only do so much for a serial molester, and ultimately an adversarial legal system is merely one in which a zealous defense checks lazy and overreaching prosecution.

I haven't read anything academic about the efficacy of offender lists so I can't really speak to them other than to say that morally I don't agree with punishing people post-incarceration or applying adult punishment to juvenile offenders.
