then they came for Transformers, and I
did not speak out -
because I was not a manchild

then they came for Planet Of The Apes (2011), and I

The weirdest part is they're contractually obligated to include Kim Catrall, but she'll be playing David Lo Peng in this go-round.

This was in Variety in January, and Carpenter will exec produce it. Not all bad news, but still...

I don't get why these movies have to be remakes- that's my beef with them.  Just make new stories with new actors playing the characters.  Worked great for Mad Max.

Has also worked pretty well for the new Planet of the Apes stuff. Unlike Tim Burton's version which was closer to a remake than what they've been doing with the franchise since Rise.

I don't think its disliking the Rock. It's more that I don't necessarily see him as the type of character that Kurt Russel played really well which was kind of iconic. Same with if he was playing in a reboot of the "escape from" movies.

But whatever. It's not like the existence of a new movie invalidates an old one.

Mad Max wasn't a remake and it was helmed by the guy who made the other films in the franchise.

"It’s okay, Kurt Russell. Getting replaced by The Rock isn’t a dishonor by any stretch of the imagination—especially after San Andreas raked in almost $115 million worldwide for his best opening weekend ever. "

 :gurl

Remake will probably be wack.

This was in Variety in January, and Carpenter will exec produce it. Not all bad news, but still...

He "produced" The Thing remake, IIRC, who was a big load of nothing.
Carpenter just doesn't give a fuck anymore, and is cashing in his old age. Good for him I guess.

Mad max wasn't a remake but it and planet of the apes is an example of a semi-rebooted series. there has been enough evidence that remakes can be solid and sometimes pretty good interpretations (evil dead, let me in, etc) that there's literally no need to lose ones shit every time a remake is being announced. The main takeaway from all the remakes is that original films are less of a draw now and that remakes creatively stifle the film landscape. Instead, nostalgia tards complain that "they" are ruining an old favorite rather than the aforementioned stagnant Hollywood environment that I am fucking distinguished mentally-challenged for wanting to be a part of because I'm a fucking dumb ass

Yea, a lot of the small scale action/comedy/gangster/sports/etc films that were everywhere in the 90s are completely dead now. If you aren't making a blockbuster film, a comedy with a big name star, or a movie about slavery or the civil rights era you're fucked.

Definitely the case. If you want to get into live action and make original cinematic stories in today's Hollywood, indie is definitely the go to route. Also television. A lot of American movie goers don't realize it but many of today's films are made specifically with the international market in mind and right now, international - particularly Asian audiences - are interested in high budget kick punch fare. Going with established properties creates less risk because they are known quantities.

GQ made a fantastic piece on this very sensation a long time ago.

I think there is some weight to the argument that newer generations deserve a chance to experience a mega popular franchise but people need to learn to just relax aje judge the quality on a case-by-case basis.

It's like when a comic book series gets rebooted or a porn star grows up to the milf genre, you feel invested since you've been a fan since you were a teen but in some cases the new version is even better.

what's weird is that John Carpenter has had so many of his films remade by now. He wasn't ever that prolific, and a significant portion of his own career were remakes already (Escape from LA is more remake than sequel, Ghosts of Mars = Assualt on Precinct 13, which also equals Rio Bravo, Village of the Damned, The Thing).

But with a single exception (Zombie's first Halloween remake) none of them have been all that financially successful, or even good, and its easy to forget, but Carpenter himself wasn't actually that successful in Hollywood. Aside from Halloween (and maybe Escape from New York) he never had an out-and-out runaway hit, he made a shitload of great movies, but he never had more than modest commercial success after (Big Trouble in Little China was actually a pretty sizable bomb).

So yeah, I understand some big studio chieftain wanting to plumb their vaults and remake something with a high name recognition and attach a big star to it. But with John Carpenter films its already been done, like several times already and it still hasn't really paid off. Also, the central joke of the hero who keeps buffoon-ing his way into trouble while his more competent sidekick mops shit up doesn't seem like a natural fit to a guy who could credibly beat most of humanity as well as a significant number of mythical beasts (I'll take The Rock over The Minotaur anyday).

I don't think it is that complex though.
Eighties are in vogue. Carpenter has some cred as a genuine director. His films are, roughly speaking, cult hits that are probably well-known inside the industry (it wouldn't be too odd that the movie business has its own tunnel vision). It's not famous enough that it has become a sacred cow, so the whole "bringing it to a new generation" sounds less ridiculous. The name-recognition (something Hollywood seems to be obsessed with) will be high in some niche circles.

It will probably be a colossal waste of time and money for all involved and a mediocre flick, but whatugonnado ?

Mad Max was a miracle. Sequels/reboots that come this far past the originals, even with some of the original crew on-board, are very rarely ever any good.

not to be outdone, Sony is developing a remake of Starman. Because, hey, paranormal romance is so hot right now. So how many years til Christine or Memoirs of an Invisible Man get remade? Carpenter's barrel is nigh-scraped at this point.

Actually, check that. A big budget remake of In the Mouth of Madness could be fecking awesome, provided they've got cojones enough to make as weird and properly Lovecratian (another word for weird) as the original

You know they'll make a CGI fest with it anyway...
Besides I always found it more Kingesque than Lovecraftian.

But yeah the page ripping effect was great. Pretty much GOAT HPL on film

Memoirs is underrated I feel...
Village of the Damned is by far the worst in his career, looks like a made for tv lite horror flick.

I like the jedi apprentice books when I was a pre-teen.  I'd watch movies like that.  Only if liam neeson comes back though.
