Itagaki: Devil's Third 'is going to be a breakthrough for the industry'

Quote
Ninja Gaiden creator Tomonobu Itagaki has claimed that Devil’s Third is so good it will mark a watershed moment in the action game genre.

“If we had given up, then we wouldn't be able to show our face to all the people that had supported us up to that point,” he said of the game’s seven year development cycle in a translated Famitsu interview. “There wouldn't be any opportunity for us to work in this industry anymore.

“Our desire was to complete the game by any means while establishing our company structure, developing the game itself, and keeping the company going all at the same time. We were finally able to make it through thanks to Nintendo who really made it all possible along with everyone in the industry, and also thanks to the expectations from all the fans and gamers that were waiting. With all that support, I couldn't be someone who would drop it all and walk away.

“It's a culmination of everything so far – not just mine, but of everyone that works here. Please try it for yourself. I think it's going to be a breakthrough for the industry. I believe it's going to take shooters to the next level.”

“Just stuffing a ton of elements in doesn't mean the player is going to have a good time though. That's why controllability is important. You can throw weapons [laughs], you can throw molotovs, you can guard, you can dodge, you can jump, you can slide. Normally, trying to put everything in just makes it all a mess, but we were able to fit it all in Itagaki-style.”

where the hell does he go from here.

Nintendo would have been a sweet gig. They'll continually pump money into development studios even after making bombs or modest sellers as long as the quality is there (Platinum, Treasure, Sandlot, Cing, Monster Games), but who's stupid enough to bet on these guys now? They could put some mobile crap out there, but that market is flooded already and who hires an action studio to make Puzzle & Dragons & Well Endowed Lady Ninjas?

He should go back to Tecmo.  IIRC he had problems with the president of the company, who isn't even there anymore.  Go back to Team Ninja and make a new Ninja Gaiden.  Leave DOA to the current dev staff since they're better.

:foxx used to be funny now it's just sad.

It's still funny.

I love this guy so much

I feel like he summarizes at least half of what's wrong with Japanese development. The other half is process oriented.

I haven't paid attention to his carreer but wtf happend to him?

I remember in the Ninja Gaiden on Xbox days he was the god of third person combat. Prob on that level that Myazaki is now with the Souls games.

He did good with his Virtua Fighter and Devil May Cry rip-offs, but faltered with his third-person shooter rip-off, it seems.  Oh well.

Ninja Gaiden is a ripoff? I wish all ripoffs were done that well.

Just saying that he built his success on making a simplified Virtua Fighter clone and taking an older Tecmo character and sticking him into a 3D character action game...the kind of game that Capcom did first with Devil May Cry.   :P

Both games started development in the late 90s.

Grats to Capcom for coming out first... with the inferior game. :itagaki

how did Ninja Gaiden 3 turn out? I know the initial release was kinda shitty (DLC features, yea!) but didn't they improve some stuff for the WiiU/PS3/360 'Director's Cut-AKA The Full Game'?

Razor's Edge made the game 'decent' by most accounts, but people still place it under the first two games.  The fixed some of the more annoying crap from the original release and then added stages for Kasumi, Rachel, and Momiji alongside the levels for Ryu and Ayane, IIRC.  They also recycled some of the game's content in DOA5U.   :lol

I got it but never put much time into it.

This will make me vilified by Ninja Gaiden fans, but I like Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge a lot more than Ninja Gaiden Black nowadays. Ninja Gaiden Black has terrible level design, terrible camera, terrible characters, terrible story, meh boss fights, still looks great, plays great besides bland enemy variety.

Razor's Edge is a lot faster combat wise, camera doesn't suck nearly as much, has fun setpieces that help pacing a lot, simple level design, serviceable characters and story, great boss fights, more varied enemy variety.

Haven't played NG2 in a long time, can't say where I'd rank it now, probably well above Ninja Gaiden Black. NGB's level design is so bad.
OH!

I have no idea, really.  I've barely ever been able to get into any of these games.  Put the most time into Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 but still never beat it.  Devil May Cry 1, Bayonetta, and Bayonetta 2 are the only character action games I've played through.

The only thing you've mainly missed out on is Metal Gear Rising. DMC3 and DMC4 are great, but they aren't that different than Bayonetta 1&2. Rising's emphasis on parrying everything versus dodging/jumping over attacks is pretty refreshing. It also doesn't overstay its welcome or become tedious.

I have Rising (on PS3 and Steam!) but only put a little bit of time into it, because I figured I should play MGS4 first.  Except that I would need to play through MGS2 before that.  But I want to finish Peace Walker first.  And none of this is probably ever gonna happen.  :lol

Should probably just move on and play Rising already.  With DMC, it's just sad-- I got DMC2 and promptly sold it off back then.  Imported DMC3 and never played it.  Got DMC3 SE and never played it.  Got DMC4 and never played it.  Got the HD collection and have yet to try it.  And I got DMC4 SE and played it for like two minutes.   :-[

Rising's story line is basically: "Yo, so after MGS4... Raiden GETS HIS ANDROID BODY BACK and then does CUHRAZY THINGS."

You don't really need to play MGS4 since it pretty much retcons that for Raiden.
