Yeah so I'm gonna make a machine in the 5-600 range or so and then like 200 for a monitor I suppose. Any advice on what to snag/avoid? Generally gonna look to the logical increments site for ideas I suppose...

Don't be a dummy and buy it all at once, if you're not stressing sit things out a bit and at least wait for the new cards to drop at E3. Sales on GPUs are building up atm.

Quick question:

Both of my case fans stopped working. I'm not sure when, but I noticed about 2 weeks ago while getting rid of any visible dust. Could dust have caused this to happen? I haven't tried to disconnect then reconnect them or anything since my PC is still working. Probably because my cpu fan/cooler is still fine. I won't be gaming on it until I fix/replace them though.

If it's a prebuilt PC then they probably threw in whatever fan they could find.
Cheapest parts kinda deal, the kind that led to my friend's PSU going up in smoke and blowing out his mobo (and everything connected to it)

Don't skimp on your power supply, if that goes out then everything can go south.

I built it myself in Jan 2014 and the case is a Define R4. I've heard included case fans can be cheap though. I'm not worried at all, just wondered what could've caused the problem.

760ti and the unlocked Pentium anniversary edition is a nice capable budget option. Get urself an unlocked mobo - z97 and I think Asus' h series mobos also allow oc, a dece semi modular psu, half decent cpu heatsink (not factory) and 8gb 1600mhz ddr3 and you have a decent machine with room to easily upgrade with better components. Fuck AMD cpus.

Afaik Pentium anniversary is great for games if you oc, maybe not that great going forward with dx12.

Been a while since using the g3258 (now 4690k), it used to outperform the 860k in every game at least. My knowledge probs outdated tho, does seem having 4 cores is much more necessary going forward.

g3258 oc is fine with stock heatsink up to 4.2ghz @ 1.2v, don't need more than a 550w psu with an overclocked intel cpu and single gpu. I used more or less the same setup with a slightly higher clocked cpu for a while with an r9 280x and it was cpu bound with more demanding stuff, but able to play anything i threw at it comfortably (at least 30 fps, mostly > 60) with high-ultra settings.

Seems fine. I never tried using an h series board, tho know they found a workaround for oc. Only thing w m-atx they're usually voltage limited @ 1.2 volts, which is cool if you're going for value performance as you should be able to get ~4.2ghz w the stock heatsink, just doesn't give a lot of room to upgrade down the track.
