Well I don't think it's perfect, but you hit on a thing I don't quite understand. When it comes to games people seem to loosely use the word Remake. Remake to me means they are well remaking the game. It's a completely new game ala Twin Snakes. Sure Twin Snakes has the same story and script, but the levels were remade. No reuse of assets. Yet some people call enhanced ports remakes, which I don't agree.

Yet also for the longest time people seemed to think a Remake of something like VII would be so easy. Oh just throw some new textures over everything I think is what they thought it would do. Like they would reuse the same layouts or something.

I mean that doesn't make any sense. This is a completely new high budget production. It's probably going to have XIII level production values with nicely animated in game and character cutscenes. It seems like it is a full level mainline FF production.

It's why I never understood why people laughed at Kitase when he said to Remake VII as a game today it would be hard. If you really wanted a Remake you'd want a FFVII with Modern FFXIII level production values and presentation. If not just get the PC version.

But a modern version of FFVII is going to incorporate modern technology and modern gaming senesinilites. If not what's he point?

Also maybe to offset the risk it's going to be episodic which I'm not sure is a good or bad thing. It's worked for Hitman, but a sprawling JRPG is diffrent.

Idk, i find having an original creative vision and following it a lot easier than copying and/or transposing something. They're different skillsets really, and having to be faithful to the original beloved by filthy weeaboos, while also updating to be a decent game in 201X seems a lot more daunting than just making FFXVI.

Can imagine a revamped Materia system will work really well with a battle system similar to FFXV.

The biggest problem is SE should really stop announcing games before their anywhere near ready to be actually shown.

My impression of SE is that they are a much smaller company than people think.  They never have the staff to actually make any of these games.  Versus sat with a skeleton crew for years, this probably has had a skeleton crew running vertical slices for the last 2 years+.  My understanding is they basically have an Osaka big staff team that's on KH3, they have DQ core team probably borrowing Square-side staff that finished with FFXV for DQXI, they have a decent size staff team on FFXIV, and then a bunch of smaller teams for side projects and a bunch of skeleton pre-production teams for FF16 and stuff.

Like until KH3/DQ11 are out, I can't imagine SE has enough staff to do FF16 and FFVIIr at the same time even with outsourcing to CC2.  Feels like they can only make one or two big AAA production games at a time.

What are they outsourcing to CyberConnect2? I haven't played much of their games, but from what little I have their animation is some of, if not the best, I have ever seen in 3d vidya.

Edit: ah the FFVII remake. Sweet. I can see that working really well.

Haha what the fuck are they doing? Could've just redrawn everything and called it a day and made a fortune off nostalgic fanboys and girls. This is going to be a barely break even proposition instead. :doge

I don't really follow this logic. It's a AAA JPG with a huge legacy. It can sell to the millions of people already open to a mainline FF game and millions of people who play rpgs and have only heard of FFVII.

Also being a new production means new merchandise, at about the same level a new main numbered FF would have.

And Square is also having this have multiplie episodes/games so it will be a safer investment.

i mean they could have remade ff7 in full 3d with new cutscenes but kept things like fixed camera angles and random battles to keep costs down. instead they're reimagining it as a AAA action rpg that'll take for-fucking-ever to complete.

That UI is straight out of some 5 year old FFvs13 screen shots/trailers.

Also isn't this being done in UE4 and NOT the existing FFXV tech?

To add to this:
  • Remaking FF7 as a basic HD version would've cost a irregularly large sum of cash considering they have to recreate thousands of pre-rendered backgrounds.
  • Doing the above would takes years and a large team of specialized CG artists to make it to current quality expectations.
  • CG quality artist, the ones who would do the pre-rendered backgrounds, cost a hell of a lot more than your typical 3D modeler and are in short supply (especially in Japan).
  • The number of consumers who are actually willing to purchase a throwback classic RPG for $60 is a minuscule amount compared to a brand-new AAA action RPG.
  • What you're seeing now is actually the safer and more lucrative choice considering they're going to be selling this franchise for 6+ years and asking fans to pay $200+ for the complete series.

A straight-forward HD remake of FF7 was never in the cards.
