At the end of the day it seems pretty clear that Nintendo wasn't speaking to the fanboys, they were speaking directly to their target audience: kids. Kids who still think Mario is cool, buy Amiibos, like Animal Crossing, etc. There aren't many kids like this, mind you - most kids I know who play videogames are into CoD and want a PS4, just as they would have wanted an Xbox 360 if they were 12-14yo five years ago.
Nintendo has been rehashing franchises for years so the outrage over that is a facade IMO. If Nintendo had shown a 2 minute trailer of Zelda WiiU these same crying fanboys would be running around telling us that one moment redeemed the entire event and "won" E3. Count on it. They're mad they didn't get to see Zelda, or another big bomba type reveal.
If not for Amiibos Nintendo would be fucked...
