Have you ever been hiking?
« on: June 20, 2015, 09:46:03 AM »
Whats the appeal? Honest question. Apparently the only thing to do in east tennessee is to go hiking.

Do I just drive to a mountain and walk around

Depends on what skill level of hiking you want to do, I guess. Lots of places [national parks and such] have marked trails that you can walk, or if you're feeling particularly adventurous you can pack up and head off into the wilderness until you fall into a ravine and your arm becomes trapped by a boulder forcing you to eventually cut it off in order to escape.

It's a distance, rate, time math problem where I could potentially die. It's pretty much the ultimate high for someone like me.

Babby hiking though, it's only alright if you got a SO with you or something.

I've done a few, mostly very dangerous and unplanned ones, when holidaying with friends. The worst one was a impromptu hike when we took them to Spain.

Now me and the missus usually prefer a more relaxing holidaying, but our friends like the whole 'adventure' element so we decided to go for a walk to a mountain area. And instead of keeping to the path my friends decided to go up some crazy steep route, I'm actually surprised none of us (there were 6 of us) got fucked up. As some of the parts we climbed were obviously not meant for people to go up on without some form of equipment. Getting potentially fucked up on jagged rocks is not my idea of a relaxing time.

Another silly one was the time we went to Sarajevo, and they wanted to go walking off path again (there are still loads of unexploded landmines from the war hidden all around the hills there) So they have paths very carefully laid out with high visibility tape and signs so as to warn people to avoid suspect areas. And keep to the fucking main path.

Me, the missus and another friend got up to a point where we'd had enough, (three hours waking in the hot sun) and said we'd be going back as the others carried on. Their plan was to camp up the mountain with no tents or sleeping equipment so they could see the sun rise in the morning from a really high view.

Anyway 7 hours later they all turn back up to the apartment looking like drowned rats, in their bravado they realised that mountains get pretty damm cold at night, and they had no lights or equipment and were wearing shorts and T shirts, they'd also gone well off path and couldn't find the way back to it, so had to walk back down through the river as the night drew in.

Luckily they made it back to the centre of town before the pitch black nightfall would have really fucked them up.

I've been hiking a few times (the trails around Mt Rainier most memorably)... not really my thing (too many fucking bugs), but I can see the appeal. Being out in some beautiful nature where its reasonably quiet, getting exercise and some vitamin D. But still, give me a mountain bike any day of the week instead.

Went to the US studying. Lived with an extremely religious family in Seattle, spent a day hiking there with them and then decided to never do it again.

If given the chance I would certainly eat mushrooms in their woods around there though. Just none of all that walking about with annoying people.

Natures cool and all when you can do something with it, like surf or ski or drink beer. But walking around looking at trees and butterflies doesn't do it for me.

Yeah I love hiking. it's one of my favourite activities. My wife and most people I know love it too.

One of the best hikes of my life was a 25km solo one in the Scottish highlands with a big backpack and a tent. Some of the places I walked where in Skyfall later :) Really amazing scenery and great sense of accomplishment

Whats great is that you get to see nature, enjoy solitude, get tired, fresh air etc. You work up a sweat and an apetite,  then.enjoy a great meal and an ice cold beer. Life doesn't get much better.

I have no clue what the appeal to hiking is. I have been on, and enjoyed, leisurely strolls through nature. Hiking to me implies a certain level of physical exertion, potentially over difficult terrain, and I'm just not down with that.

Also, I hate bugs, and the outdoors is just fucking FILLED with those disgusting little fuckers.

I only look at that stuff to jog my memory about where I am exactly.

used to do it all the time before shit labor turned my body into a fucking wreck. great way for my mind to think things out while I got exercise and saw amazing stuff. Missouri used to be volcanoes so there's lots of looking and challenging places to go. I tended to avoid the parks, especially the ones outside of the st Louis area, bc demonic hillbillies, and the areas off the trail were more interesting anyway. I miss it a lot.

I hiked thousands of miles back in my 20's all over including the Appalachian Trail (did it in 2 parts). The AT really wasn't that fun to do but once you start its really psychologically hard to even consider stopping.

Once I had kids that shit became way too hard to plan so it turned into just straight camping.

Any of you Midwest boritos who want a beautiful 3-4 day hike should check out Pictured Rocks in the Upper Peninsula. 40-45 miles and gorgeous in the summer. I don't think you want to go there past September though.

I've only enjoyed it when I had a destination to go to. Like a waterfall, a gorge or a remote lake. Hiking in a big circle or on a trail is boring.

Finally took the dive and did a pretty popular hike in the area to a small water fall.

Was alright. I went solo, but I can see how going with people and chatting would make it more enjoyable that me just listening to music and looking at trees

Also apparently I'm bad at reading trails. I turned a relatively simple path into something harder by veering off the trial by accident, having to cross the river back and forth a couple times, and scale rocks that could have been avoided.

Don't regret it. Took the "right" way on the way back and it was pretty boring

I've been hiking all my life. Did the Wonderland Trail when I was 12 and did large portions of the Pacific Crest as a teenager with my grandfather over summer vacations. I don't do big hikes anymore, but get out with my family and friends during Spring, Summer and Fall.

I can totally see why people might not like it, but I think it's a blast, and it sure helps that I live in the Pacific Northwest.
