That new Xbox One controller revision
« on: June 21, 2015, 07:45:31 PM »
Traded in my XB1 controller, stereo headset adapter, chat headset, and two 360 controllers I don't use anymore (side note: Gamestop will take anything, the controllers were clean but I had worn those joystick caps smooth ages ago :lol) and picked this up today, thought anyone interested might want to hear about what they changed.

I guess the black one isn't out yet, so I got this one instead:

 :dayum

at least it isn't bright orange or anything

First off, they added a 3.5mm headset jack, and that damned thing is LOUD. I used to crank the stereo adapter all the way up, but at half volume this new controller is equivalent to the max on the adapter.  It sounds better, too, fuller I guess. You go into device settings to adjust volume, voice monitor, etc. Hopefully they change that to make it more easily accessible.  Drawbacks are no volume/mute buttons at your fingertips.

They tweaked the bumper buttons a bit, they feel clickier and more responsive no matter where you press them. I never had a problem with the old bumpers but I still noticed the difference.

Might just be because it's brand new, but the D pad feels tighter. I dunno if they did anything there.

That's about it. Minor revision, but I'm happier with the sound now than I was with the adapter.

Oh, evidently they removed the infrared from the new controllers, so if you use them in conjunction with Kinect be aware of that. I don't have a Kinect so I don't really give a shit.

So I can use any headset on this right? Like a PS4 3.5mm jack headset? I kind of just want to buy one really good headset for these systems.

on reddit they were saying the only headsets that don't work are apple buds because they always have to have their own proprietary connector bullshit

Oh, yeah, you can update the firmware on the new controllers wirelessly so you don't have to drag out a USB cable like the old ones

Sweet, I can stop pretending I'm happy with the original bumpers now.

Are the improvements worth the price difference?

The new one was $65. The older ones are $60, right? Yeah, definitely worth $5 extra. Even if they dropped the price of the older one to $50 you still have to buy that $25 adapter if you want to wear headphones, so it's still $10 cheaper just to go with the new one.

There was all kinds of stuff at E3 about how "Kinect is dead!" but if I ever wanted confirmation of that, there it is: Microsoft dropping support from its own new hardware.

Might try to sell one of my controllers for this but I don't have the boxes anymore.
