In fairness to AiA, I have yet to read an article about this that wasn't either from a Party source or smoke and mirrors "Was Kremlinology this bad too?" spitting into the wind. My favorite was a Vox article that made this all about the lack of political freedom in the PRC and then talked about the Republic of Korea and Japan escaping the middle income trap when those were both such *thriving* and vibrant democracies during those periods.

The part I like better is that excepting the final boom and bust of each graph, the U.S. graph shows comparatively steady growth over the shown period making the large downturn remarkable. The Chinese line shows two clear massive bubbles arising the last of which may be what the downturn is headed into bursting.

Sorry, I don't know enough about this to actually discuss it, which is why I asked for details. I mean that the Chinese government can hope to become a reserve currency, but with the artificial way it has suppressed the value of its currency, when its worth is finally reflected it will hamper their ability to export.

Actually, my 30 seconds of wikipedia mentioned that being a reserve currency hurts the USA's effectiveness as an exporter. it'd seem like China would have a similar concern, no?

It probably wouldn't help exports (the Swiss franc is a manipulated reserve currency but the Swiss economy is still dependent on exports), but export-oriented industrialization isn't a sustainable mode of production--industrialization itself being a self terminating process once an economy is industrialized--and it offers benefits I would consider worth the costs to exports, for example changing the parameters of the global oil market (exclusively priced in U.S. dollars at present despite many OPEC governments ostensibly disliking the United States), further enabling the "dollar diplomacy" the CPC has been engaging in for some time (sorry for the FP link, no benji), and lower public financing costs (if the current market socialism in place were to erode into a more traditional mixed economy this would be important).

things best left unsaid to avoid the appearance of being a Kremlinology

I don't know if there's an academic term for scholars on Modern China (all the courses I took on it in university were just classified as "history") so I fell back on the old term for supposed experts on the Soviet Union to show my disdain at the simplistic and nakedly ideological analysis on China you find in English language press. (Kremlinology not being a particularly astute science when it was in demand.)

What are you talking about. Europe is us.

Yeah France is self centered and we probably share some sort of exceptionalism belief with the USA... But on the whole we are not estranged to the European concept (Franco German relation being anything else than at war was pretty central) unlike the United Kingdom.

Also I think I remember there being a law where like 2/3 of films and music on the radio have to be French (or European?) made as some sort of cultural preservation thingy. The other 1/3 is filled with the same 2-3 Hollywood films or pop songs.

There's quotas for music and films on TV but not 66%. Film industry is kept at a high rate by subsidies but it's not that much different than the USA or the various tax shelters schemes for film around the globe. I don't think any of that is to be taken as hostility, but yeah french exceptionalism is a thing.

My problem is actually with French tourists, not being a tourist in France. When I was in college in Santa Cruz, we had French tourists frequently. They would visit the French bakery. Then they wouldn't complain loudly and and I think accent about how bad the French bread was here. I normally never say this but one time I actually said "go home."

True enough. Japanese food in the USA is both expensive AND poor quality compared to in-Japan, and Japanese people THINK THEY WILL DIE if they don't have miso-soup and white rice for three days (or at least they act like it), so they go out for bad Japanese while traveling.

But, being Japanese in nature, they suffer silently about it.
