I mean, I can tread water and do a pathetic crawl stroke, but that's about it.  Can't float without moving my limbs around

This is shocking. Can your sisters swim? White suburban folk not knowing how to swim is a notch above child abuse.

Currently working on my butterfly since it's a badass stroke

The best stroke. (After a 4 stroke, no Drinky Crow.)

2 stroke > 4 stroke

The place that I was taking swimming lessons at had an arcade that had Altered Beast.  The highlight of the evening wasn't swimming lessons, it was getting to hear this:

Yes.

Not great fitness levels though, so will get tired when swimming. Had to swim for quite a stretch earlier this year, to get into a cave and I was fucking dying at the end. Before we went into the water our guide was telling everyone except me and a couple of others that they had to wear life vests, we however where judged good enough swimmers. I think they were wrong, because in the end I had to resolve to lying on my back and taking it easy (and real slow) to get back to the boat. This Russian guy even asked me if I was ok, so must have looked like I was dying.  :shaq2

I'm a white person living in the suburbs on an island where you're never more than 15 min from a beach, of course I can. :P

Absolutely love swimming and especially waterparks.

Nah. Grew up in NYC.  Most of my friends couldn't either.  Wasn't until college that I knew a lot of people who could.

Yes. I can't imagine not knowing how to swim.

Started my daughter in the pool at six months old. She had a blast on the beach in Spain the other week.

Haven't improved one bit since then.

Oh well, swimming is still awesome.

Are there any swimming classes for adults who already know how to swim? I'd like to improve some time and it seems like a good idea to improve beyond doing the stuff I learned as a kid. Problem is that I worry most adult lessons will be for people who don't know, and it would be rude to join up in a class like that already knowing how to do it.

When I worked at the Y, I would see adult swimmers with personal trainer types who would be teaching them different strokes. 1 on 1 type classes that aren't for beginners.

I don't think the Y ran it though, but it wouldn't hurt to inquire. Maybe call the local Red Cross? I do that when looking for CPR/lifeguard certification classes.

What happened? Someone die? >:(

Quote
The park's popularity went hand-in-hand with a reputation for poorly designed, unsafe rides; under-aged, undertrained, and often under-the-influence staff;[4] intoxicated, unprepared visitors; and a consequently poor safety record. At least six people are known to have died as a result of mishaps on rides at the original park. It was given nicknames such as "Traction Park",[4] "Accident Park", and "Class Action Park"[5] by doctors at nearby hospitals due to the number of severely injured park-goers they treated. Little action was taken by state regulators despite a history of repeat violations. In its later years, personal-injury lawsuits led to the closure of more and more rides and eventually the entire park.

You're exactly where I was when I wanted to get more into swimming.

At my Y there were groups for Beginners, Intermediate, Stroke Technique, and Masters. I started with Intermediate then moved into Stroke Technique. Hoping I can eventually go into Masters but I hear they do 18 laps in a row and that's still out of my reach right now.

Intermediate is really basic stuff, basically teaching how to do the different strokes and how you can use swimming to exercise. Stroke Technique was a big step up from that, with various lap drills and more of an emphasis on improving, well, technique.

I also saw quite a few 1 on 1 private lessons, from beginners to really advanced swimmers. In a semi-public pool you'll get the full spectrum of abilities. :)

Was debating whether to go today or not but I'm glad I did.

4800 yards this week :whew

I know I won't be able to go as much next week tho. :gloomy Wish I was a morning person so my after-work socializing didn't interfere with this.

I had my kids learn at a community center that was in the poorest part of town. I knew one of the instructors there (who hipped me to the program) and I am cheap.

It was very surprising to me to see all the participants in the entry class that looked like me: White, middle class surburbanite looking to save a buck. This center even had forms that people (who qualified) could fill out and have their lessons for practically free. But maybe one or two kids looked like they may have came from the area.
