Wow.

Nintendo under his leadership was pretty awesome, tons of ups and downs, but he definitely made the industry a lot more interesting.

OH!

:/

Talk about out of left field. Wasn't his prognosis getting better? It was only recently/E3 that they stated "nope, he's still very fragile."

RIP Iwata.

He seemed like a smart and passionate good guy in the industry even if business tactics were iffy; he'd sometimes be risky and get high rewards if he hit the nail like the Wii or Amibos (Well Amibos weren't really risky), but other times he was extremely conservative (like with the system lineup, securing exclusives, system prices vs power levels).  But yeah, 55 is way too young :(

This seems like it's going to have a huge effect on Nintendo's strategy.  Iwata was very Iwata, and there's no one like Iwata. He'd stick with the ship on stuff like Wii-U, he'd pump money into games that will bomb just to expand the roster and fund developers he respected like Monolithsoft, he was pretty ok with focusing mainly on 1st party release schedules while pumping up the 1st party quality.  I have to imagine whoever takes over could shake things up and change the company's direction.  Please just don't be the Zelda guy Aonuma.  And don't be anyone from NOA, that would be an unprecedented disaster.

No matter what you think about Iwata, the man saw through two of Nintendo's most successful systems. I really wonder how this will change Nintendo. It may be even Miyamoto who takes over his position.

I seriously hope not, double so when he just said he'd take a back seat in R&D on the NX.

Also 4chan's sticky thread is both awful and cracking me up at the same time. Poor taste, me.

RIP. I didn't know he had health issues, that's terrible. I always enjoyed the Iwata Asks interviews, giving a peek behind the curtain and humanizing the people involved. One of the things that happened under his watch I was very fond of.

This was great as well:

I get the feeling that Miyamoto is the equivalent of Reggie now for about a decade. He has some say when it comes to game design and console design, but he alone has never been the visionary that Nintendo needed when they go through some shit.

People in the Gaf thread wouldn't shut the fuck up about Polygon's twitter being sorta cold and dumb (picture of Miyamoto gleefully holding Wii-U shit with a headline "Iwata is dead"). People bitching about videogame sites not having comprehensive in memoriams ready.

Sad news is always taken to extremes on the internet, and those extremes are always annoying.

I hope Miyamoto isn't made president.  :yuck

I don't think he'd want the job. He's a developer at heart, and doesn't even like managing large teams that much (hence him stepping back from EAD into managing small teams a few years ago.)

I really hope someone with game dev chops is made president, though. Otherwise I could see the company making a load of rash decisions that'd put its output quality into freefall.

iwata was a victim of his own success. nintendo has always been a company which paradoxically balanced product idiosyncracy with market conservatism, but they haven't got the the balance right since wii fit

he was akin to robin williams' character in toys and grew to be just as toxic to Big Toys' bottom line. with him gone, the road to unabashed IP whoredom and funnelling as many resources as possible into amiibo production is paved.

sad to see him go.

Shit like this though:

I'm gonna admit something really cheesy here.

Whenever I would watch the Nintendo Directs and Iwata would wave goodbye, I'd always wave back. A silly little thing, but I enjoyed doing it.

I guess that won't be happening anymore :(
