Crackdown demo
« on: January 23, 2007, 12:15:47 PM »
Was released on the 360 marketplace this morning. WOW! Who's played and what do you think? Really unique, interesting, fun game. Like GTA + a dark action cartoon like Aeon Flux + Jumping Flash! Very eclectic soundtrack too - Mexican hiphop, techno, etc. It may be a mish-mash of other ideas, but still, the mash makes for one of the more original games I've played in quite a while.

It's great fun.  I only played a few minutes, but in that few minutes I managed to accidentally run over a cop and turn the cops against me, blow up several cars with a single grenade, set a dude on fire, and many bodies hit the floor.

I heard good things, but considering the download has canceled itself 3 or 4 times and it's nearly 24 hours since I first tried to download it, well, I have no idea.

I like the demo, but, uh, this is a case of why fuck the cow if you can get the milk for free.  The demo gives so much of the game away.  I got nearly all my skills up to level 3.  What's the fun of buying the game if I've seen most of the cool stuff?  From the looks of the map, the demo takes place on the largest of the 3 islands.

The demo wasn't limited enough. I feel like I've experienced most of what the game has to offer.

Well, the demo has rapid skill progression so you can see what the game will be like when you reach higher levels.  From what I understand, you're only getting about 25-30% of the island, as most of it is blocked off.   Plus, it is timed.  I think the actual retail game will give you much, much more - although I understand where you're coming from, as it is a huge demo.

I didn't see what the big deal was. I wasn't totally shitting my pants driving around shooting guys, and with few other missions to speak of, I don't see why I would buy the game.

And I've been looking forward to it since I got 360 in early October. Am I missing something?

It's alright. I'm a total fucking sucker for mission based gameplay, so I'll probably pick it up. But the game feels WAY too loose. None of the objects have any real heft, picking up a car was like picking up a trash can and I could only throw them about the same distance.

The camera is a little wonky, the lock-on needs work and melee is just way too, well, loose. It's so easy to try and kick a bad guy and send a car a mile down the road instead. This will actually make a GREAT long rental from GameFly or something, but it lacks the feel and character of GTA that makes it so replayable. And the weapons are pretty same-y. But the super cop feel is nice, I guess. Jumping from rooftop to rooftop and crashing a criminal front is awfully exciting.

And the ZOMG SECRET AGENT TUNNEL at the start is great. But, well. We're looking at a well-earned C+ here.

It doesn't have any charm to it (like the GTA games) and the super power'ed up protagonist feels like a cheat codes been used or something. Its way to easily to draw parallels between this game and GTA and yet, I bet this game is going to be smoked when GTA 4 comes out.

Also, one of the reasons that keeps me going in GTA type games are the various locales and whatnot (well, much more so in GTA:SA). Not feeling this game.

i agree with you.  they revealed too much in the demo.  and i dunno how it's gonna feel being gimped until one of your stats gets maxed after 6-7 hours of play.  aside from that, i'm still picking it up because co-op is fun as shit.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I really found the demo to be unexciting.  It's like another GTA clone that isn't as good as GTA.  :P  I didn't try getting my skills up, maybe jumping around like an idiot and going up buildings and stuff makes it better.  But right now, the demo screams "The game that comes with the Halo 3 Beta!!" rather than "Crackdown."

I'm getting ZOE1 vibes from it.

Yes. In fact without the "super powers" this game wouldn't be that interesting at all.

One of the things I like the most is the look. Halfway between realistic and cartoon, it's pretty unique.

I can't stop playing this damn demo.  I love just about everything here...the way it feels, the graphics, the physics, the sound.  I'm totally addicted to it.  Even though the short comings are pretty obvious (like the lack of variety, non-existant story, and some goofy targeting problems) I'm still having more fun with this than I've had in awhile, especially in co-op.

I didn't really give a shit about Crackdown before but now I can hardly wait until the 20th.

Me, too.  I played it for two straight hours tonight.  I've had more fun with this demo than I have had with many an entire game.  I think I might delete it, though, just so I don't get burned out before the actual game is released.  I do want to try co-op at least once before I do that, though.

I see.  I nearly maxed out my agility skill, and since you can jump from roof top to roof top easily, it's so much fucking faster then a car.

Was playing it more today and its settling in nicely :-[

I really like the Ability system. A weird comparison but it feels like Zelda in some way, when it comes to abilities. You can't life a car at the start but focus on working on your Strength and you'll be chucking cars around in no time.

How do you build up your strength anyways? Do you have to beat up people with your fists and they let out orbs or something?

yep.  builds up pretty fast.  one hit kills after first upgrade I think.  After 2-3 upgrades you can lift most cars.  Agility is more useful though (at least in the amount of area in the demo).
