Superhero Fanboys Annihilated

Quote
"To my mind, this embracing of what were unambiguously children's characters at their mid-20th century inception seems to indicate a retreat from the admittedly overwhelming complexities of modern existence," he wrote to Ó Méalóid. "It looks to me very much like a significant section of the public, having given up on attempting to understand the reality they are actually living in, have instead reasoned that they might at least be able to comprehend the sprawling, meaningless, but at-least-still-finite 'universes' presented by DC or Marvel Comics. I would also observe that it is, potentially, culturally catastrophic to have the ephemera of a previous century squatting possessively on the cultural stage and refusing to allow this surely unprecedented era to develop a culture of its own, relevant and sufficient to its times."

Comic book movies have long since overstayed their welcome.  I kind of thought (read: wished) they'd be gone about five years ago.

Of course this smells of "Old man re-interprets current trend as sweeping indictment of current society", but whatever. I kinda like the theory.

He's basically making the stock internet argument that Hollywood is lame because they just keep making sequels and reboots, only directing it a comic book movies specifically and using longer words.

It's weird to see him lament escapism when that's why he started writing in the first place.

Nah, despite a saturation in comic book movies, there are still quite a few characters and properties that haven't been adapted yet and therefore will be "new" to the general movie-going audience. I'd say that the next decade will continue to be really good for comic movies. The real problem is when Marvel and DC run out of properties that haven't yet been adapted, and they either have to start making new characters [which is unlikely] or rebooting B-tier and C-tier characters that weren't really all that popular the first time around. Stuff like Batman and Spider-Man will keep going, though, because they've got broader appeal and larger fanbases, but it'll likely be the end of the good times.

tbh any apocalyptic fiction has to prove it isn't nihilistic, especially since the overwhelming majority of them completely dispense with anything resembling society. (Exemplified by The Walking Dead where a society is an antagnoist.)

Mainstream corporate culture is just catching up to the wealth of fiction they thought wouldn't sell for shit in movie form. They packaged the stories as blockbuster fanfare. So that's what most of them will be.

 :yeshrug

I'm too busy catching up on old movies and diving into brit detective tv series to really give a shit.

Talk about oversaturation...

Of all of those, the only ones I'm genuinely excited for are Deadpool, Age of Apocalypse, and kinda sorta to see what Benadryl Pumpkinpatch does as Dr. Strange.

You mean to tell me that Alan Moore, a guy who fetishizes superheroes and anything related to comics, is criticizing others for doing the same? I for one am shocked.

I love the dude, but it's hard to take him seriously here.

I agree that superhero movies are getting out of hand though.

Comics were a mistake, it's nothing etc
It all seems so omnipresent, but down the line a lot of it will be probably filtered down.

I think he genuinely do care, and I think he actually did sign permissions and all back then (admittedly because he tought nothing would come of it). And well, all of the adaptations of his work pretty much vindicated him. Must be pretty bad to see your work being transformed into shallow mediocre shadows of their source. He actually ask for his name to be taken off from the Watchmen film and gave his money to Dave Gibbons, so I don't think he can even fall under the accusation of "hypocrisy".

He's an old man yelling at clouds, but I think he can get some slack.

Remember that time both he and Sean Connery got roped into a League of Extraordinary Gentleman movie?

And Sean Connery quit acting because of it.

Moore's a writer. He has elevated and transformed comics through his participation in the medium. The maturity and intellect he applied to Swamp Thing started a trend so strong that it has, unfortunately, had knock-on effects which permeate 99% of the comics on the market.

Dude has a strong personality and strong opinions, which he is welcome to. His comics are consistently amazing, so respect the art even if you're not 100% on board with the artist.

Would hiring David Goyer and J.J. Abrahms to make a film adaption of his Supreme run be a form of assisted suicide?
