I got food from a Japanese places that listed suggested tipping amounts as 18%, 20%, 25% this weekend. RIP 15% tipping.

Tipping even in America is frustrating since there's no consistent logic to the expectations depending on the type of restaurant. Every coffee shop has a tip jar and I have no idea if I'm just expected to throw my change in there or a bill. I feel guilty when they say thank you for a quarter but I suspect they spiked the bills in there.

Restaurants are simple and I just start at 15% and go up to 30% if the service was good and the food was cheap.

There's a logic. It reinforces labor aristocracy but it's not like McDonald's is busing a table, giving you a place setting, or an employee whose narrow responsibility is making sure you get what you want.

Sweating percentages on small dollar transactions is a waste of your time. The $2 between tipping ten or fifteen percent on that $40 TGI Fridays tab might have a great deal of marginal utility to my server but I couldn't care less and if you do you should be going on dates to Taco Bell instead.

I don't think you understood what I was saying. Going to a restaurant where the servers job is to bring you food/drink refills is where everyone knows how to tip but what I'm confused about is the etiquette for when you're at a cafe and spent <$5.

I do think it's fair for servers at Dennys and Cheesecake Factory to get the same amount of tip. Although most people who disagree with that are cheapskates who don't tip, some have tried arguing with me that the service is so different that it warrants getting paid like twice as much. Maybe the number of tables/guests a typical server has should be considered too but until I know otherwise, I'm going to continue progressive tipping policy.

Not including service in prices is so weird seen from here. Sounds like a boss wet dream dressed as consumer's empowerement and holding workers to too high an expectation for what remains in most cases a meagre living wage.

Deducting wages from whatever you buy would probably be met with a fist to the jaw in most other settings.

Edit: To be clear I'm not advocating banning tips. I think tips should be a generally marginal discrete bonus on top of the mandatory service.
