Just from people I know, a lot of them who had never read the book liked it way more than those who have. There is a strong thriller/mystery aspect to Watchmen if you don't know the plot beforehand, which anyone who read the book would. So then it's more about the execution. (I thought the acting and pacing was really bad and that hurt it more than anything else.) Similar to V for Vendetta.

My parents liked it fairly well, and the only other superhero one they've seemed to like in recent years was Winter Soldier. Even if they had no clue who any of the characters were. They thought The Avengers was incoherent nonsense*.

Also, that's a nice thread title.

I think they did Rorschach and Dr Manhattan justice. The other characters varied from serviceable to terrible. I imagine the movie story felt disjointed as all hell for anyone not familiar with the material

Malin Åkerman was awful has Laurie. All the scenes with her and Nite Owl were awkward as fuck

It's not that Dark Souls hasn't influenced gaming. It has. Arguably more so in the indie space I would say honestly where things are a bit more free. You could have an interesting discussion on that. Or even looking for ways where it maybe has subtly effected Triple A gaming. I do remember Bioware talking about a Dark Soul's game before one of their games released although to me it felt more like lip service to try to get some hardcore community cred at the time but whatever.

But nope. He goes in on the idea that Dark Soul's is super relevant to the most casual mainstream portion of the gaming market simply because he likes the game alot.

I'm not a fan of the game myself for specific reasons I won't bother to go into as it's not really relevant. But I get that among the hardcore community it definitely has been really popular and influential in many ways.

It's like seeing a popular movie (or niche movie) that I don't really like but I can see how others really liked it and copied its style and trends.

Or to use another example I love Tarantino. His movies are brilliant and funny and engaging to me. I think he's best director of my lifetime and his movies personally mean a lot to me and the craft of film making. But I wouldn't suggest that Tarantino movies have changed what mainstream consumers want to see in mainstream movies. Has he influenced movie making? Of course.

I liked Demon Souls and Bloodbourne.

But the games can be so arbitrary. It is impossible to get some things without guides unless you are a total spaz and just walk around the world and replay the game 100 times to see what happens if you do this or that. That bugs me to no end.

Yup, I cut my teeth on really challenging arcade/action games from the 80's and 90's, but the difference between those and Souls are that those games require much less of a commitment than Souls, not to mention I'm much better at 2D than 3D. I'd probably seriously love the Souls games if I can actually sit down and make progress, but if I'm playing for a few hours and I haven't gotten anywhere, that pisses me off and makes me feel like I'm wasting my time (at least in more traditional RPGs I can grind it out if I hit a wall).

I think people on the GAF thread overestimate how much of a bother this solution would be to most consumers. I am not a big fan either, but I guess in theory it's nice to be able to only show two buttons for a NES type game or 4 for the more modern layout.
