That wasn't my argument. My argument is that all sites should use SSL and that my experience switching over was relatively painless. My sites don't have ads though, but we did run into problems with external images and Twitch. With images, we were forced to switch all URLs to HTTPS, which broke images hosted at places that don't support SSL. And for Twitch, well, we had to kinda wait them out. They're on their way though.

SSL isn't free in terms of work required, but it's always worth it. I'm sure using ads with SSL is possible, but I don't know the technical side of GAF so I can't say for sure what the holdup is.

SSL is always preferable because most Wi-Fi networks can't be trusted and malware/adware injection is a no-op for unencrypted pages. Password scraping can also be used to capture the credentials of users not just for the current site but other sites that has the same username and password.

NSA, privacy, et al aren't ever fully thwarted by SSL alone because the URL is still always exposed and a lot can be learned just by logging those en masse. The goal for SSL is security and security is always a worthwhile goal.
