Why are rich(er) people often so pretentious?
« on: September 07, 2015, 05:31:48 AM »
I'm trying to understand this phenomena.

I wonder if it's me perceiving them as such or them truly being like that? Of course there are many exceptions. Maybe it's just the nouveau "riche" that I meet sometimes.

Gawd I'm sorry you can't save any money from your normal salary which is already 50% higher than mine and you think public transport is for people that smell.

Yes this is how these people view the world,  they also seem to believe getting wealth is everyone's goal in life. The concept of "good enough" is foreign to them. If you are not busy getting ahead (financially or socially), what are you doing really? Being busy is a status symbol as well next to money.

Some would say their standards of good enough are just a lot higher, but in reality I think there is no good enough for them as they need to keep up with their peers.

Hmmm http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jon-jachimowicz/being-busy-as-a-status-sy_b_6130220.html

Quote
So why is it then that being busy is associated with high status? To answer this question, let's bring in perspectives from biology and sociology. Biologist Amotz Zahavi's 1975 'handicap principle' suggests that a signal of strength (or high status) is one that is costly to the signaller (as this could not be afforded by an individual who is weak), as well as highly visible. From this perspective, being busy would be associated with high social status because it is costly to the person working long hours (in that she forfeits the opportunity to engage in leisure time) and communicates visible value to those around her (e.g., that she is in high demand). Indeed, this is the perspective that Belleza's research paper proposes.

An alternative explanation emerges if we turn to the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. In his 1979 work Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste, he claims that how an individual chooses to present herself depicts her status -- and crucially, her distance from lower social groups. For example, tastes in food and culture may be indicators of class because trends in their consumption seemingly correlate with an individual's fit in society. Importantly, Bourdieu proposes that foods formerly associated with the lower classes achieved upper-class status only because individuals from higher echelons of society could consume them without fear of being classified as lower class. Instead, being able to consume traditional 'lower-class' food such as lobsters or livers became a way for the upper class to distinguish themselves from the middle class, who, if they were seen to consume these food products, could be falsely taken for a lower-class member. Therefore, in contrast to Zahavi's handicap principle, which proposes that individuals aim to engage in behaviors that are costly and visible, Bourdieu's perspective on distinction highlights that individuals strive to engage in behaviors that distinguish them from lower social classes.

I know people worth in the tens of millions and you'd never know it, they stay under the radar.  I also know people who make $50,000 a year but spend like they make $150,000; these people are miserable deep down and are one unplanned expense from losing their asses.  Doesn't seem worth it to me but they're in their 20s and 30s and want to be known as ballers.  Good for them I guess.

Probably depends on the circles people run in and what you're exposed to.

It's hilarious drivel though, he's put out a book now as well that I'm not going to read but I have enjoyed following the Twitter account. It's a view into the 1% mindset. hehe

I wonder if it's me perceiving them as such or them truly being like that?

It's probably a bit of both, i.e., you being more sensitive to their judgement because you know they are rich, while they are a bit more discriminating because they can afford to be.  Also they are inherently better than you.

People on the bus often smell terrible though. I take the bus like a pleb, i kinda like it too, but know many who aren't wealthy at all that won't. It definitely smells terrible sometimes, i've hopped on a  bus about to swipe my fare and turned straight around coz some chump sprayed a shitload of body spray or pissed they pants, i've also paid my fare then realised and been too cheap/lazy to switch and just powered through piss stank

In my experience, the self made types actually just want to splurge on their hobbies (cars, guns, cessnas, etc) but if you saw them on the street, they seem like anyone else.

When I see someone bragging about their latest trips and expenses, I assume that they are riding on their parents pocketbook. I think secretly they are ashamed of how little they themselves have achieved.
