honestly, why do people prefer some womanizing druggie fat plumber (who doesn't even do his job) over this lovable guy?

Pac Man is THE gaming icon. Wouldn't be a Mario without him.

I remember when people told me Pac-Man would never be in Smash Bros because he isn't "important anymore" or "relevant" and then thought some shitty JRPG character would get in over him.  :P :P :P

Actually they seemed to do a decent job at pimping Pac-Man. Short of doing new updated to its age open world collect-a-thon AAA games, they pretty much kept the ectasy swallower relevant. Meanwhile Konami has forgotten Bomberman in whatever cellar they locked him in.  :'(

"Let's buy Hudson and all of its property! Then let's proceed to cancel everything and dissolve the company anyways!"

I was really interested in that 3DS Bomberman game. It reminded me of the N64 game  :-\

bomberman can stay locked in the basement with his slow-ass gameplay. pac-man tho, that's still a big franchise. i mean they still do make shitty 3d adventure games somehow. and pacman dx and 256 are both amazing games that have come out fairly recently.

They really squandered that dude from around 1985 until about 1994. Then they released Pac Man 2:  The New Adventures WAY LATE into the 16-bit generation. Gamers were already looking to the next generation and that game was pretty underwhelming (and strange).

Pac-Man had like two good games, both of which were like 30 years ago. I think it's obvious why Mario's bigger.

Pac Man is THE gaming icon. Wouldn't be a Mario without him.

I don't think that's true...

Pac Man 2 was a guilty pleasure of mine. It's such a strange game but I always have so much fun ruining Pac Man's day.

This fucking animation always gets me though. :lol

the maze chase genre kind of died out post mid-80's, making it difficult to keep Pac-Man relevant. Same reason you don't see that Dig Dug guy or Mappy round anymore. Mario was much more adaptable.

Pac Man DX is indeed flipping fantastic though. The PS3 exclusive The Last Guy got mucho playtime from me as well.

i mean, where do you think the trend (that lasted thru the 80s and up to the mid 90s) for recognizable gaming mascots started?

Pac-Man 256 is pretty great, the Pac-Man Championship Edition shows just how solid the core gameplay is. It is an amazing core mechanic.

I helped make Pac-Man World 3D for PS1, and a little of Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness, and it was frustrating how the local western management didn't understand what they were dealing with. We also tried updating the character, actually it was similar to how Mickey has been changed for the most recent range of digital shorts and games -- but local management forbade us from presenting it to NCL (Japan).
