Undertale
« on: October 08, 2015, 12:00:39 PM »
Started and finished this game yesterday.

Legit most charming game I've played in years brehs.
Thought it was gonna be all dank memes and shit but nah.
It gets close sometimes but man that ending.

There are at least three main endings, based on the level of violence you employed.

Finished a full pacifist run. I don't think I could go back and do the others that require you murder everything and everyone.

Seems like I remember reading that to get the "real" ending you have to do a neutral run [not full on murder, but some kills] and then do a pacifist run after that. But that was just what someone was saying in the Steam comments, so I don't know how accurate it is.

It's true, you have to do a pacifist run where you don't kill anyone then you'll get an ending. You can actually start that same save after beating it and get the true end immediately (assuming you didn't kill anything)

Also I'll mention that soundtrack is really well done for what it is.

I've heard of this game but it seems like your typical 'indie RPG influenced by Earthbound'... is it more than that? Worth playing? Is it long?

I don't mind the indie 16 bit RPGs (hell I'm gonna be working on my own sometime late next year...) but it's rare they come close to the greatness of the originals.

Felt the exact same way about it too.
Someone gave it to me, I played some 10min got bored and quit the first time thinking it was another indie game up its own ass.

Gave it another shot since I was bored and realized I hadn't even made it past the short intro portion. Older title influences show for sure in some regards but it's very much it's own deal to the end. You'll have some subtle nods to old games in like attack schemes and general aesthetics, but nothing really ever hits you over the head or does the whole nudge and wink remember this shit shtick.

I mean I think it's worth playing for a game you can clear in 5 hours or less.

Yeah as someone in the same position (hating most Indie JRPGs because they don't get what makes the original good, and yet I'm working on my own JRPG) I have the same questions/concerns about Undertale. It looks decidedly not good.

Just ignore the fandom surrounding this shit.
I mean I think the game is dope, but the fanart and nonsense coming out of it is pretty absurd now.
