Yeah, I just upgraded from my trust ASUS T100TA to the new ASUS T100HA.  Same size, but now with 'classier' build (aluminum casing) added USB C port, 4GB of RAM, 64GB SSD and slightly faster speed...for $299.  It's far from top of the line -the resolution is only 1200x800 (although the screen is bright and colors are great) and the speakers suck- but for the price it's hard to complain.

What do you want to do with it nudeemcee? It's a legit spec upgrade on the iPad but you're getting a huge touch device that can't use a mouse due to iOS.

 I could kind of understand the point of this device for those invested in the iOS UI and app store but who want to bust out a some creativity every so often. Otherwise macbooks and tablet PCs seem like a better buy.

But I've actually never owned a single Apple product so maybe there's some magic I'm not aware of.

well i greatly enjoy ios9, am a mac figgurt, and want to be creative every so often. sure it's over-engineered for my general use but for my use I just need a good wp/office, a styus for note taking, and multitasking. I test drove an air multitasking and it does quite exactly what I want it to do, which was my only real concern.

and fwiw i'm also going to get a rev b macbook when that drops. current one seems under, ahem cook-ed. it's kind of pathetic but my retina mbp (2013) feels tubby now. I'm starting to get the thin fetish

In 5 years (or less) the iPad pro and macbooks will just be one device/OS with different screen sizes so that's another thing to consider as far as replacing your future purchases...that will......eventually become obsolete. Flippy touchscreens and faster mobile processors are bringing everything together.

I was once in your position where I used an Asus transformer tablet running Android for 3 years in college and it did everything I needed but there was always an extra step/app compared to a laptop running a regular OS. That was back before the Surface came out so everybody lost their shit when they saw a keyboard/touchscreen combo. You'll probably have a smoother experience due to iOS but I feel like I'm watching somebody buy a fun car that might blow up in 50,000 miles.

i get what you mean. at the same time, as I said I demoed the air to get a decent sense of how it worked with an (apple) bluetooth keyboard and it did essentially what I wanted in a sort of streamlined-no-fuss manner, which is to say streaming netflix, trolling gaf, and writing documents/powerpoint.

it's weird, my ipad 2 was/is essentially a portable streaming screen or a backup browser, but with how iOS/ipad has developed over the years, I can work on one comfortably at a desk and drop all the extraneous stuff (ie keyboard) for lightweight portable media/note use. plus it'll fit nicely into my saffiano briefcase 

and when the ipad pro 2 rolls around with 3d touch and whatever i'll just sell this one and rebuy. i've decided to move to an annual/biennial refresh cycle for my shit.

If Microsoft dropped the top-of-the-line Surface price by at least $200, I'd be all over the i5 Surface Pro 4 for $400-600 or so. You can get models with higher screen resolutions.  The Asus Chi line (Chi is Chinese for "air."  Nice subtle jab at Apple there, lol) will get you 1920x1080 res and you can get larger size models at 12.5" too.  But they cost more.  Around $500 IIRC.  That's still not too bad, but with these things I want 'em cheap since I already have laptop and smartphone to use.  The resolution on the HA is even less than the TA, but the screen actually looks much better in comparison, so I can't complain.   But those speakers

I got my mother an open box Lenovo Miix 2 for about $550 and it had a 4th gen i5, 8GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD. It's basically an 11.6" inch Windows tablet with keyboard dock that comes included but I don't know if it has any sort of stylus support. There's a new Miix 700 that you might want to consider but it would probably be a bit more than the Miix 2s they're trying to clear out of stock.

The Miix 2 also doesn't have an actual hinge so the angle between the screen and the keyboard is fixed. It just has this sort of channel that it magnetically slots in to which is the reason I bought it because she would mainly use it as a tablet with occasional email typing and my experience with detachable mechanical hinges is that they can get overtorqued at times (had to super glue an Asus Transformer hinge back together once). If you're okay with just typing at a desk where the fixed angle is ideal then it's okay for that but this and probably the Surface Pro are not great for typing on your lap.

I'm sure next year we'll see a bunch of Surface Book competitors from other manufacturers but they could end up aiming for the $1000+ enterprise laptop market. You might want to consider a laptop that just has a 360 degree hinge like the HP Spectre (love mine), Lenovo Yogas, or the Dell Inspiron series.

My dad just got one of those for super cheap a few days ago, actually. Outside of having to rip Superfish Malware out of it ( GG on that, Lenovo.  ). I'm kinda jelly. I couldn't get the screen to completely bend back to where it functions like a tablet. But the touch/keyboard combo is pretty good. No detaching, but for his purposes of general office work it's pretty sweet.

I'm returning the ASUS T100HA.  I assume the culprit here is Windows 10, but this thing definitely runs slower than my two-year old T100TA with Windows 8.1.  But what made this a really easy decision was finding out that Costco.com will be dumping 128 GB/4GB RAM Surface 3s with the keyboard covers included for $400 on black Friday.  Sold.

EDIT: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand scratch that-- the Bundle is for the Surface 3 Pro only, so with the discount it will be around $850.  But I'm still ditching the TA.

I think he just thinks that they've gone as far up the ladder as they can go at this point, but there's no way he's going to sell his shares off unless something happens that clearly indicates a downward spiral.

I'd be all over an iPad Pro if it actually ran OSX stuff and allowed for Windows to be installed via boot camp.  You know...just like how Windows tablets work.     I don't need an oversized version of my phone, but clearly many people don't share that opinion.

Yeah, I love my AppleTV and am curious about the new one with the controller, but I consider the controller/graphics addition to make this first-rev Apple hardware, products in which I no longer indulge.

FWIW, I mistyped the 64GB in the earlier description, sorry. I'm going for the 64GB iPad Air 2, and the 128GB Pro was what I mean. Can you believe they're also making a 32GB option on the Pro? Who is going to buy that? It's crazy. It'll get remaindered to hell and back at the first product refresh.

And maybe I'm a glutton for punishment.  What I should be doing is sending back that T100HA and waiting to see what comes out next year.  But instead I just ordered an ASUS T100 Chi.  That's the "higher end" model that's a few months older, but has a 1920x1200 screen, all aluminum frame, thinner design, and all that junk.  Same price as the HA, so why not?    Then I can take my T100TA and use it replace the ancient HP laptop in the living room that serves as a media player for local files.

ASUS also announced an 8.9" T90 model back in January, but it appears to have been scrapped or never released.  Even had a keyboard dock like the other models.  I would have been all over that.  I would love to have a good smaller-sized Windows tablet.

They really need to include those keyboard covers with the Surfaces, though.  Other companies include keyboards with their models.    Doesn't have to be top of the line...that's what selling accessories is for.

I think the issue here is that even though the iPad Pro has a powerful processor/decent RAM, you can't run OSX on it unless Apple makes an ARM version of the OS. It's inevitable that they'll bring iOS and OSX together one day but it's still pretty debatable whether they'll consolidate everything into custom ARM chips like their phones and tablets have or x86 which I will assume, out my ass, is the safer thing to do as far as maintaining software support.

Best Buy is doing $400 Surface 3's (not i3 on though. The one mobile chip) so you'd save $100 or so if you waited until next Friday. It doesn't come with the keyboard in a bundle, but the total cost would still be like $100 less or so than the Costco bundle.

I kinda want to jump on that deal and plan to, but the fact it isn't even an i3 is a bit

OS X is fine. It's everything else and going on iOS that is the problem. I really wish they'd just slap Darwin and OS X into the iPhone and be done with it. But they won't because they are too worried about not trying to merge the two a la Windows 8/10.
