So Nintendo seems to think the Wii-U isn't doing bad ENOUGH...

I love the Mario sports games. They have flair, a wide variety of modes and tons of fan service that makes them really stand out. Vivid memories of Mario Golf: World Tour are still burned into my memory as it is one of my favorite Nintendo 3DS games to date. This is why, somewhere, I was excited to give Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash a go. I wanted the game to be a good for those short playing sessions and get deep into the modes it had on offer. Quickly after booting the game though, I just felt an immense amount of sadness. I am here to tell the tale about why Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is not a good game.

The big mode that they are promoting here are the Mega Battles. These are the matches that I played during E3 and Gamescom. It follows the same gameplay set-up as Mario Tennis Open with the added bonus of Mega Mushrooms being thrown on the court. When touched by a character, he/she will grow to gigantic proportions for a limited time. It will make balls easier to hit and attacks will charge way faster than without them.

The problem is that they aren't a fantastic addition to the gameplay. It just forces the other player to defend a bit harder and wait until his chance comes. This situation feels more annoying in doubles as the players without the Mega Mushrooms feel a bit useless throughout.

The moment I opened up that online tab, my jaw dropped to the floor. The game has no support for lobbies or communities, which pretty much means that you can't play with friends. The only options on entering are Singles and Doubles. By selecting one of these, there are some limited stuff available before entering a match. There are Relaxed and Serious options, with the latter allowing you to play some ranked battles and grow your standing in the world. You are free to choose any of the standard modes, but unlike local multiplayer, you don't have any control about the length of the match. You can choose for a tiebreaker or a two-game, one-set match. In Doubles, you can play together with a local friend or an Amiibo of your choosing, but that is only freedom you are going to get.

Quote
The more controversial thing is that there is just one stadium with nine different courts. While this one stadium is nicely detailed, it drains the energy out of you so quickly that I couldn't care less about what I was doing. There are some interesting courts there like Mushroom, Carpet and Ice, but ultimately just all felt sort of there.

The music isn't anything to shout about either. It doesn't really have that Mario charm to it and feels like music of any given sports game. It is good background music, but that doesn't mean that it fits the formula.

Quote
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash feels like a disappointment in every given way. With one stadium and limited online options, you already see how this game is shaping up. Then you also take into account the slight changes to the formula and how little everything in the game seems to matter. The game feels like a gap filler and not a great one. It fills the niche for a Mario sports title on Wii U, but it also feels like a fall from grace at the same time. Even when compared to Mario Tennis Open, Camelot wasn't inventive or creative with this one. That makes the situation so darn depressing.

Apparently, destroying one of the few legitimately good remaining spinoffs that you have left is a brilliant business decision.

I've never played the GBC sport Mario games. Always heard there was some sort of RPG mode or something. That sounds really neat. Why haven't that been in the other entries?

N64 and Gamecube versions were packed full of content and game modes. GBC and GBA companion games had massive RPG modes you could even transfer over to the console versions. The 3DS version wasn't that great, but it at least tried to keep the RPG mechanics.

Wii U version, Nintendo is content to shit out a barely featured game with apparently worse mechanics, barely any game modes and an online system where you can't even play with friends.

Not even the biggest Nintendork is going to defend this pile of shit.

Who am I kidding. Someone will. :goty

It's almost as if they know this thing isn't really salvageable at this point and are abandoning ship a bit and just dumping out whatever. :japancry

It's really weird though. Most of their Wii U output, despite all the fuck ups surrounding the system, were pretty great. I don't get why they just decided to drop the ball hard with this one. :-\

Mario Tennis on the N64 and Mario Golf on the GameCube were the best.

I got all 108 Birdie Badges in both the N64 and GC Golf games. They were damn good games. Camelot never really topped them.

3DS one was kinda meh though. Course design was boring on the new ones and the DLC broke the game since you could just pick star powered Rosalina and drive that sucker onto the green. No really good strategy in it, just gimmicks.

Yeah, you can do that. Even in random games, you can have your friend join up, although teams are randomized in that one.

This is just sad.  I would have bought this since it's pretty much the only arcade-style tennis game left.  How do you fuck this up?

I'm going to assume that they're rushing this game up because they've delayed Star Fox Zero which was suppose to be out this season. Which is still not a justification, because jesus christ, I'd rather have nothing than a rushed barebones product.

I hope the Star Fox Zero delay gives them enough time to polish the hell out of the game, because it looked a bit rough at E3.

Mario Golf on 3DS was pretty good with all the online tournaments and shit. Yeah it didn't have the RPG mode that all the lamers keep crying for but it had solid classic style golf mechanics and plenty of content.

Mario Tennis on 3DS was pretty sad though. I'm not really surprised at how bad the Wii U one was, it was apparently a super rush job.

At this point in time, I'm surprised Nintendo is doing anything for the Wii U at all.

Also Mario Tennis Open was pretty barebones.  I think the overlap of those who buy Mario Tennis and those who buy anything with Mario on the box are as such that Nintendo thinks they can get away with half assed efforts without damaging the brand too much if at all.  I really liked Mario Tennis for GBC, N64, and Cube so I was interested in this game.  Not anymore.

Mario Tennis Open was the Wii game right? Wasn't that a straight port of Power Tennis, only with added waggle and nothing else?

That was New Play Control, which was a series of GC games ported to the Wii w/ waggle stuff.

Open was the 3DS game if I'm not mistaken.

Wii U was flashing notifications trying to shill this game with a free VC copy of the original Mario Tennis game for a pre order. A game which has significantly more content than Ultra Smash.

Why the fuck would you want to buy a game with less content than the pre-order bonus you released 15 years ago?  :doge
