I wish I'd gotten the PAL version.  They're all region free.  But they EU version has the special blue Dreamcast jewel cases, and Watermelon had some specially manufactured for this print.

it's the "HD" version that was released for PSN, XBL and PC recently.  It has a somewhat expanded story and updated graphics and sound.

From what I've read and what little I've played of it, the game is not just retro in aesthetics; it's retro in its design and gameplay. That is to say, bad by modern standards.  I don't know when I'll get around to ever playing it.  But I'm happy to add it to my collection for the console I'm most find of.

The Kickstarter collector's edition (which I did not get) rivals anything Working Designs ever did for the PlayStation Lunar games.

Though I did get a copy of that faux leather guide book.

I don't know any real issues with the gameplay. It's supposed to be pretty difficult though. It doesn't hold your hand or always tell you where to go next like most modern RPGs do. That's all I meant by "bad by modern standards."  Nothing wrong with that though. I haven't played very far into the game though, so I'll defer to the opinions of those who have.

Oh, that is perfectly fine to me then. Handholding in RPGs always felt so bleh for my liking.

Well since Lucretius didn't even play the game, allow me to step in

The game isn't difficult, but it is very imbalanced. Heavy reliance on "elemental" damage and defense, so you just need to equip the elemental resistant items for each boss fight and you can survive any battle.

The game is so imbalanced that you can beat the game fighting only mandatory battles (there is an achievement on this - based on a guide on gamefaqs from now-deceased creator Tim). This used to be kinda difficult but there was a patch that included NewGame+ (maybe absent on physical versions) which let you simply steamroll the game with your OP gear and levels.

There's a Phantasy Star (2) nod easter egg as well.

This game is a cool nostalgia trip but once you actually play/finish it you will find the art/styling as humorous as me. It's not really a "that's so 90s" thing.

I trust your opinion, demi. The first batch of the Dreamcast version just shipped last week.  I'm one of the first Americans I know to get it.  I've played maybe 30 minutes of it. Don't know if I'll go back to it as I have enough to play right now (FFXIV and Fallout 4).  It may indeed be a poop game. I'm mainly just stoked about the novelty of a new dreamcast game that's not in a DVD-style case.
I believe it has the new game + option and any updates patched into the digital download version within the last year.  It has an option  to play it in 16:9 mode (with a lower vertical resolution), but I haven't been able to make it work on my TV.
Anyway, it'll look nice on my shelf and may be a good eBay item before too long.

Btw, this was the first game I've helped crowdfund. The dreamcast version was scheduled to be released about two years ago. The decision/publisher Watermelon was garbage about communicating with the community that had given them money in advance.  I'm glad to finally have the product, but it definitely soured me on the Kickstarter process. I figure it'll be about five years before I finally have Elysium Shadows (Dreamcast game Kickstarter) or Shenmue III in my hands.  I think I'm done crowdfunding things.
