Is that true? The people I've known who collect blade weapons are typically harmless nerd-types. I've never really detected a societal anti-melee weapon sentiment in the US.
I mean in terms of having them outside your home. Not just carrying one in your person in the streets, but even transporting them in your car. Cops will tell you that they can get you on related charges for a baseball bat if you don't have a ball in the car with it.

But mainly I mean we should be able to carry swords if open-carry guns are considered okay.

I see what you mean, but it doesn't really strike me as strange. I mean there's a huge lobby for firearms since they're an obvious weapon of choice, and in many places it's the norm to own one or see someone open carrying. People would ride for swords and shit if they were remotely practical weapons, but seeing someone with a morning star is understandably more eyebrow-raising than seeing someone with a glock

As far as cops conflating toys with weapons, I think some cops tend to be hilariously defensive about the slightest perceived threat. At one of my high school first day orientations the school officer announced that punk spike bracelets and belts were now banned because "those things are just BRASS KNUCKLES"

It's generally strange to someone like myself who lived in places where the only people with visible weapons are the popo.

There's also a difference between owning a weapon and seeing them brandished in public.

WWE has no idea what it's doing. However, the talent they have is probably the best they've ever had. As I've said for years, watch NXT.

Also, today's wrestling is undoubtedly a golden age of wrestling. Assuming you ignore WWE that isn't NXT, and that's pretty easy to do, you have easy access to wrestling all over the world with its own style. If you want wacky supernatural elements and actually GOOD sports entertainment, where every episode builds upon the last, in a serialized wrestling story that takes the telenovela history of the medium to its heights, there's Lucha Underground. If you want 1980's esque wrestling where the "story" merely amounts to "I want to be the best", and every single move tells a story, watch NJPW. If you want an Attitude Era feel of grit and storytelling, watch RoH. All of them have weekly shows that are merely an hour long. Combined with NXT, that makes wrestling 4 hours a week. If you don't watch Raw, that's the same amount of time plus one hour. Not much of a time commitment, easily accessible, AND Lucha is currently on break for season 2.

Today's wrestling is definitely in a golden age in terms of talent. It's just that only WWE exclusive watchers ain't in on the action, proving the nubs they are. Only nostalgia lames think the past is better than today's wrestling options.

I mean, legally, it's whatever.  Threats of violence aren't protected speech, but by it's nature it's a subject with a big gray area, and I'm not well-read on it.  So I don't know where it falls with the letter of the law.

Putting all that aside though, these people are assholes.  Right?

Their views and actions have been defended by a libertarian. Res ipsa loquitor.

A knife or a multitool with a knife is one of the most useful thing you can carry around.
Also in principle, I don't know if I have a problem with open carry of guns. However in the specific case discussed here, the message was very clear : Either those people think they are potentially exposed to some harm that require bigger firepower than police outside of (to the best of our knowledge) is a banal mosque or they are parading a not so implicit threat of extreme prejudice. Both feels completely over the top and irresponsible.

I grew up in rural New Mexico.  Mountain lions would wander into my front yard.  When we would walk around the property we carried guns to scare them.  Wildlife is why most people open carried.  We also lived 30+ minutes from the nearest law enforcement.  So folks walking into a gas station with a handgun on their hip was no biggie.

But no one walked into Sears or Macy's with their Colt LE6920 just to be a dick.  These people are definitely the minority.  But the combination of being vocal and an idiotic minority makes open carry sound completely insane.  I also realize that the day to day life of most Americans and those who support open carry (myself included) do not have a legitimate need for open carry.  But I am against blanket restrictions because of how I grew up.

Oh wells.  I've come to terms with the fact that morons ruin it for everyone and even as someone who is pretty pro gun I'm up for some legal changes to keep these idiots from hurting someone.  Gun legislation is honestly something I'm really torn on because the statistics don't lie and most people are not well trained/comfortable enough to handle one honestly.  I don't think either side of the argument are really presenting decent legislative solutions nor being realistic.

still not sure if I'm surprised at how fast this country slipped back into overt white supremacist terrorism.

I guess I could say that I'm not surprised that lots of people assure jumping at the chance, but I am still a little saddened that the media by and large continues to ignore or downplay it

Bernie Sanders introducing people to and making socialism less of a bad word. :rejoice

The continual being proving right of white supremacy and its systemic and endemic nature as a part of shared white culture.

Black people getting further organized and realizing integration didn't do shit.

The rebirth of the Black Communist.

White liberals getting their medicine that they're just as fucked up as white conservatives on a daily basis.

People losing the "culture wars" as language evolves and "PC" language stops morons in their tracks.

The future is bright. Read Karl Marx, James Baldwin, Angela Davis, Malcolm X, and MLK. wash down the masses tears in a tall glass, repeat.

Your tone was less "these guys are assholes" and more "there ought to be a law."

The former is just you exerting the First Amendment, which is fine, and exercising freedom of expression is part of what makes America (and Texas) great.  It's a good thing that their speech is out in the open and can be criticized in the light of day.

The latter is you whining about the constitutional rights that if removed would absolutely make America suck.

P.S. It's hilarious how you call me out for devil's advocacy when Himu's right there saying overtly, undeniably racist as fuck things.  Is there some reason he gets a free pass?

For what its worth just let it be known I don't talk to you at all except for side by trolling or name calling. And you can safely do the same. I won't even pretend to argue with you. First because I think your positions and arguments are dumb. And second because I legit think you are a phony and a pretty awful guy. That goes back to NeoGAF. So let's not even pretend to have an "enlightened" debate. You can feel free to do the same.

Also the tone is whatever you were looking to read into it apparently which your brain did. But just to be clear that wasn't my tone but it you want to take it there, personally I'm also fine with them being thrown in jail and the laws being changed so that can happen. You have to remember. I don't suck at the teat of the founding fathers like you do.

if your first reaction to people being harassed and intimidated with guns is to say "their behavior is protected by the bill of rights" you might have a problem.

Westboro isn't out there bringing guns to people's funerals either so I don't think the comparison is perfect.

Eh, given the monument to Khorne Americans have built over ~15 years now because a terrorist attack made them feel afraid, I'm perfectly fine with people stopping and filtering the emotions they feel in the immediate aftermath of something bad through an intellectual framework.

Donald Trump is a race baiter. Positive Touch is not.

Race baiting means:

"The unfair use of statements about race to try to influence the actions or attitudes of a particular group of people"

Race baiting does not mean identifying systematic racism (that makes whites uncomfortable when discussed in public.) Just wanted to clear that up. It's interesting how right has been co-opting the term for their own purposes, especially conservative radio and the fringe news sites.

He's probably assuming PT isn't white. Protesting unarmed teens getting shot should not be called NOTHING. I suppose you're also one of the ones who don't think George Zimmerman did anything illegal.

Wait, why should act like Zimmerman's version of events (ie that Martin attacked him for no reason) is the absolute truth?

Quote
Selk says the mosque attracts some first-generation immigrants, and the vast majority of the Muslims he's met there are professionals.

"They're generally techies. They're Microsoft employees, they're very very well educated," he says. "One of the first Irving, Muslim grassroots activists I met had worked on the particle super-accelerator that they were building in Texas."

Selk says the armed protesters aren't Irving residents.

"They're all from cities in the general area," he says. "Some of them are convinced that there's going to be, you know, a violent confrontation with American Muslims. If you've seen images from that protest, you'll see a man with a long-barrelled gun and camo gear walking down the sidewalk behind a woman in a headdress on her way to worship."
