No, he's meant to be funny but GRRM can't write comedy
4 (12.9%)
He's funny by the standards of his time, not according to our modern sensibilities
5 (16.1%)
It's important to his character that he uses humor and sarcasm as defense mechanisms, doesn't matter if he's actually funny

I'd go with the last option tbh. Most of his "funny" lines come as he's being confronted, second guessed, disrespected, etc. It's a role he has to play, or thinks he has to play. Same way he plays up the "monster" role. I don't think he truly wants to rape Cersei and Tommen yet he made the threat all the same.

He has some funny lines here or there. But we all know the funniest man in Westeros is Stannis Baratheon. :lawd

He's funny because he's shorter than normal size.

Yeah, last option. He's an acerbic dick and he has reason to be one, which makes him a sympathetic acerbic dick.

I voted GRRM can't write comedy but I am a bit biased because I think the books are basically garbage. I wonder if it's supposed to be funny by the standards of its setting (like, you know, the creepy sexual stuff.)

Agreed, really like ADWD but the end is frustrating. I'm fine with the end of the Meereen plot, but leaving out the battle climax of the northern plot was a bad decision. Both the north and Meereen battles were cut from the book, I understand there wasn't room for both...but not having either was stupid.

That being said all the northern stuff in the book is strong, especially the Reek stuff.

At least the first dozen or so chapters of Winds will be momentous.  :doge

Yeah, I liked AFFC & ADWD a lot, but cutting out the finale for ADWD to put at the start of the next book brings it down a notch.  I guess with AFFC you can say how long Breene's plot went on brings it down a notch, but her stuff was still good to see the world post war of the five kings and the other plots in AFFC were great.

Anyhow, since we're all talking about the book now, any news on book 6 being out before season 6 airs?

We'll see. Multiple rumors about editors expecting to receive it next month but who knows. S6 starts in late April this time which gives him more time. Not betting on it though.

TWOW should be great. Even if you dislike the last two books it would be hard to deny they set up this one up to basically be ASOS 2.0. Three large battles confirmed, a certain person's parentage reveal/confirmation, cliff hanger resolutions etc.
