Netflix: A crapload of new content

It really is amazing how much the world has changed when it comes to content producers like this. I mean whatever you think about the quality of some of the Netflix stuff, its amazing how much they are doubling down on this stuff in an era when the traditional networks can't seem to do anything right.

If you're a fan of scripted Netflix shows like Jessica Jones and Master of None, rejoice: the streaming service is doubling down on its commitment to original programming. Chief content officer Ted Sarandos announced that Netflix will reach a total of 31 scripted shows over the course of 2016 in a speech at the UBS Media Conference this morning. That's almost double the 16 such shows the service aired in 2015. Sarandos also shared that Netflix is working on 10 new feature films, 30 kids' shows, 12 documentaries, and 10 stand-up specials. "It's not just a lot of volume," said Sarandos. "This is quality stuff."

Netflix's push for greater original content has been slowly accelerating for years, but the company's expansion is still staggering when laid out in simple terms. The number of scripted Netflix series was stuck in the single digits until earlier this year despite the success of shows like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black. The service's rapid growth has created a sort of vicious cycle: expanding into original content means other networks are more hesitant to license their own shows to Netflix, which means Netflix has to make even more of its own original content to remain competitive.

Interestingly they aren't really doing trash shows. On some level or another their stuff is pretty popular with viewers. Granted I've only seen 1.5 seasons of House Of Cards which was stupid, but it's very popular/driving subs.

They had a horror show I heard was terrible and unpopular but that's about it.

Marco Polo was a surprise because of the budget, shows how invested they are. If they maintain the quality of shows they've had so far I probably will never drop my sub.

Yeah, of all the Netflix shows I've seen, Hemlock Groves is the only one that was objectively bad in my eyes. They could have just done a bunch of garbagey reality TV or whatever but they seem to get that creating quality content will drive subs more than quantity.

Haven't seen Narcos yet. I guess I need to watch huh.

I haven't seen the latest wave of stuff but the early waves are okay but nothing amazing. I still prefer hbo or a&e when it comes to tv shows. But like I said I haven't seen the newer stuff. House of Cards to me represents that first wave. A lot of popularity. A lot of buzz. But not actually that good outside of a standout lead performance.

I think Narcos will be remembered pretty well depending on how they route the second season. It certainly has the potential.

Maybe. Is there anything on Netflix that is top tier HBO quality for me? Personally, not at all, except for one show. 

My favorite show they did and the closest thing to top tier is Master of None. Probably the best new comedy show in the past five years.

Orange is the New Black is about the closest I think. I'm sure others will disagree though.

Naa.  The high-bar for Netflix right now would be something along the lines of Boardwalk Empire (House of Cards is at about this level), which is C-Tier HBO.
