Fast Racing NEO - F-Zero Alternative On Wii U!
« on: December 13, 2015, 04:27:31 PM »
Got a Wii U?  Dust it off and go download Fast Racing NEO ASAP!  The game really feels like a budget F-Zero GX successor.  The game's aesthetic is more along the lines of Wipeout, but the game play and controls feel more like F-Zero, right down to the boost power system.  The soundtrack is also fantastic -no surprise, since Shin'en always nails that part of their games- and the sense of speed is superb at an almost-constant 60 FPS (there's a few hiccups here and there when a lot is going on on the track).  Stages also have alternate routes and hazards/obstacles.  The game contains a championship mode, time attack, hero mode, local, and online multiplayer.  It's only $15 and takes up around 600 MB of space.

You can listen the full soundtrack here.

F-zero was always my favorite future racer over wipeout.

I was never really able to get into the Wipeout games, so I'm glad this is far more like F-Zero.  It's very arcade-like.

The aesthetic of this is more 'student project' than wipeout. And from that first video the game seems not only devoid of any character what so ever, but also way less interesting than GX. 10 ships per race and tons of wide straights? :zzz

Same. I love aesthetic of Wipeout, but I never found them fun.

How do you not get Wipeout?  It's pretty straight forward if you play F-Zero, the only difference is learning how to powerslide turns using the brake pedals which makes it a bit more like a Sega arcade racer.  They also start really slow to ease players in and the only get fun and fast on later difficulty tiers (which open up pretty quickly).  The first difficulty is supposed to be slow for learning the track layouts.  It's a pretty good design imo.

That's too bad.  I love F-Zero (although only GX, old-school F-Zero is solid, but GX is 1000x better, maybe because it's more like Wipeout to me) & Wipeout equally, two of my favorite racing games series ever.  Will check out Neo next time I plug in my American Wii U, which is probably when Zelda comes out.
