Started DS2 tips anyone?
« on: December 14, 2015, 03:11:56 PM »
Started playing this as a caster, dicked around Majula for 30 min before finding the Forest of the Giants.

Any tips what gear to get and what stats to level as a caster?

I got an old whip from some birdsnest but I need way higher stats for it.

PREPARE TO DIE. Repeatedly. Also attack the Giant Dragon when you get a chance. :doge :doge

(I seriously have no build tips for you since I struggled to get a good idea for stat building myself. That said, I don't think going Mage is useful here compared to Dark 1 or Demon's. You might be better off with a Melee person.)

Dark Souls 2 being considered garbage ::)

Dark Souls 1/Demon's Souls loyalists are probably the worst part of any fanbase ever.

Seriously, is this NeoGAF all of a sudden? DS2 is a really good game, a step down from DS1 in some ways, but let's keep things in perspective here: DS2 is far and away better than just about every other game in its genre.

Here were my issues with Dark Souls 2

Some areas are quite barren visually.
Felt like there were more challenging platforming bits. Really stressful.
Some boss fights weren't really needed, felt like padding.

Improvements with Dark Souls 2:

Area variety. Feels like a full adventure through all sorts of terrain and land.
Combat feels tighter when it comes to timing.
More viable build options.
A lot more weapons and equipment.
Performance was vastly improved from Dark Souls 1 with the 360 version.

I disagree on builds and area variety. Especially the area variety. It just felt like you were being shuttled from one ruin to another in between caves and forests. There wasn't any swamp (thank god) or ice cave like Sheath from Dark Souls 1 here.

Noooooooooooooo

I spent like an hour in Dark Souls 1 trying to make the damn jump at the Firelink Sanctuary to get to the Bird's nest to revist the Undead Asylum.  The platforming in Souls is garbage and I absolutely hate if any major content is locked behind oddball jumps.  If they want to throw an item or two behind some tough jumps, that's fine, but not whole areas or main game progression.  Fuck, not going to enjoy more platforming...

This is what I mean about area variety. Dark Souls 1 was far more limited due to connectivity to certain areas. Dark Souls 2 is broken up into a lot of small chunks with a couple large chunks. Dark Souls 1 is mostly a few huge chunks with some small chunks.

The color scheme and mood of areas is far more distinctive in Dark Souls 2, at the cost of none of the areas being connected non linearly.

When it comes to character builds, a lot more weapons are viable for use throughout the entire game. There is also a lot more spells for all spell categories. Having replayed Dark Souls 1 twice not that long ago, most of the weapons are hot garbage, even when maxed out.

I've attempted to beat the game twice but always got sidetracked and played something else. The game is still brilliant of course, just didn't grab me like DS1 did. I've got a lvl 100 dude at the endgame, I should get back to it, beat it and clean out those cheevos.

Claiming the game is "garbage" is a cop-out of course. It's not as tight and cohesive as DS1 but still A tier software.

I think the main difference is in DS2 you can make progress quite a bit faster and clear out areas without ever knowing them too intimately, which was a major draw for me of DS1. You had to memorise a lot more sections and enemy patterns to truly succeed and the game definitely felt more old school and retro-like in this regard.

And Premium Lager fuck yo tips, just get in there and discover shit. If you've played DS1 you know how that stats work so collect weapons and experiment with them, you can re-spec this time so I recommend just playing around with a build and seeing what sticks.

I do think discovery and experimentation is the most enjoyable aspect of the game so just focus on that

Get 105 AGI asap.  The game feels sluggish as a motherfucker without extra I-frames.

Scholar of the First Sin "fixed" that. You now have to dodge respawning enemies.

The problem with the "area variety" for DS2 is that it often feels like all the areas were designed in a vacuum before being linked together, so the world doesn't feel like a single, natural location like it does in any of the other souls game. You have some areas were its daytime and you go through a tunnel and its suddenly the dead of night, the scale for certain locations don't quite match up to others, like how the game has you "climb" that huge idol in Iron Keep that's waaaaaaay bigger than the area you actually traverse, and there's more than a few areas that are simply not very interesting or over in a flash and very much feel like padding for the sake of making the game bigger/longer than the first one.

I wouldn't call DS2 a /terrible/ game, but it definitely has the weakest overall design, like the team had way too many ideas and tried to execute all of them instead of trimming the list and focusing on less. The whole torch system is the biggest most glaring example: back in the beta for the game, the lighting was so low that you could barely see inside certain areas and made some places work like the Tomb of the Giants from there first game, were you couldn't see shit without having a torch handy and using up your free hand with in. In the final game, everything is so well-lit that using torches is completely redundant and unnecessary. A bunch of thought and space went into putting things in the game that would be great if well-executed, but ended up sorely undercooked.

Get 105 AGI asap.  The game feels sluggish as a motherfucker without extra I-frames.

Totally forgot this. The decision to tie the speed of your animations to Adaptability is as :kobeyuck as they come. Completely worthless stat that was purely added for tedium's sake given its not an issue in any of the other games.

I quit games cause I respect my free time. No time to play lifesinks like Destiny or games that I don't like.

Destiny must have touched your no-no spot to cause you so much butthurt. It's already won. You have nothing to prove.

Why is Lager so abrasive? I only said that Dark Souls fans are cancerous. Just look at how they bicker and drop epic maymays. I love Dark Souls games.

Get a shield with 100% physical block and stop having fun because the game isn't balanced well.

I never understood how shields worked in DS1.  Any hit blocked would eat all my endurance and then the next hit would hit me for damage.  And I had max END at 40.  I couldn't use the really big shields since my STR stat was pretty low, was using mid-sized ones.  I'm guessing size makes a difference?

The Shield stat "Stability" determines how much stamina gets eaten by each hit or a huge hit.

In this case, the Tower Shield is way better at absorbing hits than the round shield.
