Best Christmas movies?
« on: December 16, 2015, 06:57:48 PM »
I'm getting into the xmas spirit and I've decided to watch only xmas movies in the run up to the 25th. Any suggestions?

What I've got so far:

Die Hard
Home Alone 1 & 2
Scrooged
Bad Santa
Jingle All the Way

The Jingle All the Way VHS tape my family got at a Blockbuster would cut to a toothpaste commercial towards the end of the movie, there would be a black screen for five or ten seconds, and then the movie would continue.

The final straw was when my family would be accused of stealing DVDs when we would rent them. An employee then told us that other employees have been stealing stock and that we shouldn't take the accusations seriously.

The same day the employee told us that, I got home with my rented game, Syphon Filter: Omega Strain, and the disc wasn't in the box.

I don't understand Jingle All the Way. People like different things.

Somehow never watched A Christmas Story. I missed the whole rise of that movie into the phenomenon it became.

My family used to watch A Christmas Story every year because my grandpa hated it. We all liked it, but I think we liked that it was an inside joke more than anything. This was right after it came out on video in the 80s. It was kinda strange when it became an institution that was shown 24 hours straight.

It was a loooooong path to that movie blowing up. IIRC it bombed at release and was relatively unknown through the 90s.

My grandparents had the VHS so that's how I caught onto it, but it was game over once TBS decided to do their marathon (circa 2004 I think?) Edit- 1997, wow, didn't think it was that early. Maybe I didn't get TBS as a young kid.

It's a nice movie, I enjoy watching it every year.

Edit-

Quote
As of 2009, the film had been shown 250 times on the Turner family of networks.

:dead And at least 72 more times since that year. :dead

The dad from A Christmas Story looks almost exactly like my grandfather did when he was in his 40s.

Haha! I thought mine did too, that's amazing. Kinda spoke like him too.

Yea, we loved it too when it was just a movie you "discovered" on the video store racks and not shoved down your throat every holiday season.

The only Christmas movies I still watch as an adult are the various versions of A Christmas Carol. My favorite is the 1951 Alastair Sim one, but it's pretty hard to mess up. I'll watch ones with The Muppets, Captain Picard, and General Patton too.

I have a vast array of Christmas specials on my media drive, though. A Wish For Wings That Work, Will Vinton's Claymation Christmas Celebration, A Garfield Christmas, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rambo Christmas, Ghostbuster Christmas, Mario Christmas, Pac-Man Christmas, Sonic Christmas, Pikachu Christmas, I'll watch all that shit.
