Best Cloud Storage?
« on: December 27, 2015, 12:02:10 PM »
My PC is starting to get old.  I've decided that I'm just going to replace it with a Surface 4 Pro, get an external HDD, and I want some cloud storage as well for backups.  External HDDs seem to get a lot of good reviews and I will likely get this one: http://www.amazon.com/Book-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBFJK0040HBK-NESN/dp/B00E3RH61W/ref=lp_595048_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1451235361&sr=1-2

Anyway, I want a good cloud storage system that has a lot of space (1 TB minimum), won't accidentally delete my shit, and I can expect to be around for 5 years.

It seems that in light of what I'd like, there are three good options: Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive.  The one I'm the most uneasy about is OneDrive, it seems like Microsoft has the tendency every now and then to just drop something.  Dropbox seems like it's in good shape but who knows.  The only thing that I have heard that is negative about Google Drive is the lack of privacy but LOL if you think you have anything resembling privacy if you have an internet connection these days.

So any experiences?  I do want at least 1 TB, just to have it.  If I feel like amassing a Rahxephon91 sized porn collection, I have the ability to do so.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

I recently signed up for 1 TB at Dropbox. It's a service I've been using for many years and it's great. I believe the other alternatives are cheaper though.

Google Drive is the best. More flexible plans (Dropbox and Drive both offer 1 TB for $10/month, but Drive also offers 100 GB for $2/month, 10 TB for $100/month, etc.) The web interface is the slickest web app I've ever used, and it has the requisite desktop uploader and smartphone apps. Sharing controls are world-class. You get version history for every file for a month back.

If you can, do both Google Drive and Dropbox. Redundancy is its own reward, and they're easily both head and shoulders above the other competitors (especially now that Microsoft has basically surrendered the fight.) But if you only had to choose one, I'd go with Google (WHAT A SHOCK.)

Uhh, don't go with OneDrive, they recently just slashed all their plans with little notice. Seems like Microsoft has basically given up trying to compete.

Will Dropbox be around in five years? I'd say it's 50/50 tbh. It's pretty easy to imagine Google still being around then, though.

As for privacy, all services have automatic file checks for potentially illicit content and all companies involved will concede to law enforcement when it comes down to it. I'm not sure how Google Drive is supposed to be any worse about this, it doesn't run Google's ads or anything.

None of these services are going to disappear overnight. You will have several months to switch provider in case they announce that they are shutting down.

Onedrive is terrible for some reason. Lot's of sync errors, sometimes newer versions of files go missing.

Dropbox has been my go to for years now, never disappointing me.

No real idea about Google Drive.

Dropbox can fuck right off for shuttering Mailbox. I still haven't found a decent alternative that lets me auto archive annoying coworkers / conversations quickly.

There seems to be any number of ways to get a free TB or so out of OneDrive. We use it for several things at work, including clients who can't connect to Google Drive for whatever reason.

Inbox is great and is only getting better.

Not anymore, I wouldn't think.

I have a 2 TB Dropbox and a 1 TB Google Drive.

I vastly prefer Dropbox and use it much more.

I've been very content with Google Drive for the past two years.

As Andy stated, the web interface is pretty good, Google docs' integration is essential if you've been relying on it for some time, and I also like the smartphone (Android) app/integration.

Having various options of auto-back up when my phone's memory is almost full is a godsend. This is mostly relevant to my photo collectio, especially after Google photos switched from G+ to Google Drive. It definitely helps that the Google Photos app has been increasingly more useful and feature rich.

Anyhow, I pay $2 for 100 gigs/month. I remember comparing services and rates back when and this was the most appropriate plan for my situation.

Bottom line is that everyone should switch to a cloud drive solution. It's been years since I had any personal documents saved exclusively on a local drive. This precaution literally saved my ass a couple of times. It's p cool. You know, until someone hacks the shit out of it.

Could be bought by someone and shuttered in a month. Who knows? :yeshrug They were founded 8 years ago and still haven't IPO'd/still rely on private investor money to float them.

Dropbox is struggling to find its footing and is canceling all their spinoff shit to focus on their Google Docs/Office 365 competitor which sucks.

I would suggest one cloud and one local. That's my system now and it's working pretty well.
