You know I may be nostalgic for the good old days of gaming but one thing I don't miss is the shit-tier sound quality of music and sound effects. Video in OP makes my fucking ears hurt. Only rarely does old music sound good.

I love chip music, quality chip music has so much more character and is much more memorable than your typical forgettable hollywood wannabe soundtrack found in today's 'AAA' games. Thankfully we still have indie games.

Orchestral sountracks can be pretty samey, but there's still a lot of variety and really good video game music out there. A lot of it is atmospheric though, which probably contributes a lot to the opinion that modern video game music is worse than retro music.

Mining melancholy  :delicious The break with the choir must be among my top moments in videogame music.

Although I can understand why some people prefer the Genesis, especially from a modern POV, where the Genesis has a more distinct sound compared to the SNES, which was much more versatile but limited in Sound Quality.

Sounds more like a lawn trimmer.  :lol

I can't lie though, some composers for sega games worked that chip and made the most melodious farts.

In terms of audio/sound quality? Sure, they had a Sony made chip (partially?) due to the potential impending partnership for a CD-ROM add on which we all know the end result of. BUT the Genny's FM Synthesis chip has a special buzzy/farty sound to it that when made use of well results in some amazing stuff with a classic arcade-y sound. I was a SNES brat but knew a person or two with the Genesis and thus mostly missed out on it, threads like these are a treasure trove of sonic ambrosia for some of us. The SNES gave people a larger pallette to work from sonically and it's impossible to argue with the work Kondo, Mitsuda, Uematsu et al did on the machine, however some peeps mastered the limitations of the Genesis and produced some incredible work within those confines. It's like asking do you prefer Jack White's work in the Stripes or his other/solo material that's more blown out. One doesn't invalidate the other, maan.  8) I cannot and will not try to argue against THIS:

That 16th note bassline with a fucking trumpet lead and those panning harps, cot dam. :bow But that Batman piece I linked earlier is also absolutely godly.

yeah the thing with the Genesis was that you had to have some real talent to make something good with it. this meant that most of the time playing a genny game meant hearing some audio abortions. shit like the doom song posted above where some dude took a melody and substituted every instrument with deep farts

Sword of Vermillion had some amazing music, which surprisingly I never see used as ammo in the SNES vs Genesis Sound Chip War:

Yeah the Batman and Robin soundtrack is totally insane. Jesper Kyd also did Sub-Terrania iirc and went on to do Assassin's Creed soundtracks

Mega Man X has one of the greatest soundtracks ever, there's just something about it. It would probably be megaepic on Genesis too.

For some reason, whenever Genesis vs. SNES battles come up, I always think back to this one, maybe because it was one of the few "less popular" games I played at the time on both consoles:

One issue I have to take with those Batman & Robin and Hard Corps soundtracks is that you had like a 25% chance of ever hearing anything past like the third level. :lol

I've never understood the whole Gunstar is hard meme when Genesis had kings like those two games still. That I think came out around the same time. You can beat Gunstar in an afternoon easily without breaking a sweat or needing continues.

SNES Batman and Robin wasn't hard but was pretty good too:

Yeah, MMX might be the most consistently rad VG soundtrack ever. Every single track is a classic and uber-catchy as fuck. Certainly the high mark for the SNES and chiptunes in general.

Was playing my friend's X68000 and came across this game, Algarna. It's a terrible side scrolling RPG with a Ys style 'bump' system... but the hit detection is really poor and you never know whether or not you're going to connect. But... the music is excellent:

Then I found out it was composed by none other than Yuzo.
