Building a new PC this year
« on: January 06, 2016, 10:18:04 PM »
The ol' i5-2500 and GTX 750ti just isn't getting along like it used to, unfortunately. I thought about just upgrading again [I've been upgrading a part at a time on my current PC for 8 years, still using the same case and monitor], but I need a new motherboard for a new processor and new power supply for a new graphics card, so I decided just to start from scratch.

So far, I bought a Corsair Spec-01 mid-tower case, a generic Bluray drive, and a EVGA 700W power supply.

What I'm thinking about getting is: an i7-4790, 16GB of RAM, a 250GB SSD for the OS, a GTX 970, and a new monitor [currently looking at a 24" ASUS to replace my aging 20" Acer].

Rough estimate is going to put me at about $1,500 for the whole thing, but I'm probably going to space it out over the course of a few months, so it shouldn't be too hard on my wallet.

That's pretty similar to my current setup- I have a 4790, 16 gb of ram, 250 ssd for os/a few important games, but I have a R9 280X. I have no complaints, am able to run most things on high at least. (Witcher 3 will only run at 30 fps on higher settings, but honestly I rarely notice the difference between 30 and 60 fps, I'm that sort of philistine.)

Is the 970 DX12 enabled? I'm honestly waiting for DX12 to hit/launch before I think of upgrading/piece-mealing my system.

Just about every NVidia card released in the past few years supports DX 12:

Huh. 760 apparently is supported. Well, I guess I'll wait and see. I'm not in a rush yet. :doge

What resolution monitor are you looking at? My G1 970 struggles for all high detail on some games at 1440p, and definitely can't do ultra. If it's 1080p you're definitely fine then.

Wait for Nvidia's Pascal graphics cards to come out before you build.  They're rumored to hit around Q2-Q3 this year.

If you want a 1920x1080P ASUS monitor, get an MX model.

They come in 23", 25", and 27" sizes.  The 27" model is at the top of the list on Displaylag.com.  I use one for my consoles and it's a fantastic monitor.  Looking to replace my PC ASUS monitors with them but the ones I have are still working OK.

That's my exact PC, except I have the 4790k. It'll run anything you want without stress and should stay cool as well.

I wish I'd gotten a DVD/BD drive for my PC. There's been a couple times I could have used it. May still buy one.

I've got a 27" Asus with 2ms response and I fucking love it. Great monitor.

I think I have worse graphics card 480gtx but a core i7 and 32gb ram and I can run everything I have on high at 1080p.  However I haven't bout a recent game since like gta5.

AMD Polaris/Arctic Islands is due this year the same time frame as well. I'd probably hold that 750Ti for the moment and wait to see what Nvidia and AMD do first. The first DX12 games are dropping around March time (Not sure if Rise Of The Tomb Raider is though it has Windows 10 only features for Nvidia Cards) as well as Nvidia and AMD usually presenting new hardware around GDC so you will at least get an indication of what's going on with the big card manufacturers.

The new series of Nvidia cards are more likely to be more expensive than the 9-series in the short-term, though, right? As much as I'd like to break the bank with the graphics card and processor, about $350 is probably the most that I'd be willing to drop on a graphics card.

Might be enough for the 970 equivalent (just below top-end).

Prolly the same price range as the 9 series is right now.

970 came in around the same price range as the 770 did so I'd imagine the 1070 or whatever rebrand will come in around the same RRP.

Cool, I think I'll wait and see, then, for how the new series of Nvidia cards looks and focus on getting other parts of the computer instead.

My current computer bit the dust unexpectedly on Friday [most likely the primary hard drive failed], so I went ahead and bought everything that I needed in order to get my new computer put together and running.

Unfortunately, I ended up with a faulty motherboard and spent most of Saturday and Sunday trying to figure that out. But I got the motherboard exchanged for another and now it's all good.

I was looking at PC parts today and thought it would be cool to build one, then I realized I can get like 20 full price retail games instead which would cover my gaming for like 3 years at least  :lol

Thought of Ultra settings though :drool

The 2500 might have been okay for a little while longer if I just added in a really good GPU, I want something that's going to be sufficient for several years into the future. And the 6700k is one of the best Intel processors on the market right now that's not $600+.

Plus, I've been dragging around that computer for 8 years, occasionally adding a piece here or there, I really wanted to start completely fresh from the ground up.

I am going Zen + Polaris this year. Gotta support AMD.
