Do you/Would you own a gun?
« on: January 07, 2016, 07:53:58 AM »
I have a FOID card (which is basically a license to own a gun here in IL) but I never thought of actually owning a gun since I really don't see a use for it.

Although it would be cool owning a HK USP.

What about you peeps? Do you own a gun or would you ever buy a gun?

I don't, nor do I have any interest in owning one. If you gave me one I wouldn't throw it away in disgust or whatever, but I can't think of anything I would use it for, other than shooting myself at some point obviously.

I own 12 and I've got another on order.  I'm getting into competition rifle shooting so my one on order is .308 to join a local shooting club here.  I also just love to collect.  My dad and grandfather both collected.  My oldest gun is from 1962 and was passed from my grandfather to my father and then to me.  It's still in perfect original condition.

I don't really buy into the whole self defense thing much (at least not in the city).  Although I admit I did at some point and I do currently have a CHL.  But most of the guys I talk to who talk about defending themselves just sound insane.

I also don't get the tacticool AR obsession.  These idiots spend thousands to dress up their $700 Bushmaster so that they can feel like they're in COD or something.  I'd rather have a collection of different calibers and styles so when I go to the range I have some variety.

I've shot guns (my father's) but I do not currently own one nor am I in a huge rush to get one.

And I'm not completely against having one if for some really odd reason (societal collapse, super bad economy, etc.) I needed to go out in the wilderness and hunt for some protein to feed myself.

I don't own any guns and I would never store them in the same house as my family. Shooting is fun and I would probably enjoy hunting. Since I already have plenty of hobbies it is not something I have picked up.

Had one when I was a teenager. Small 22 rifle for target practice. Don't remember what happened to it.

Then I grew up and lost interest in guns.

My dad bought me a 20 gauge pump shotgun when I was 16. I was also give a single shot 20 gauge by a friend of my dad around the same time. They are still at my dads. I have no intention of bringing them to my house mostly because I have no place to put them.

I have no problems with guns. I love target practice and skeet shooting. I do have a personal problem with open carry because it's hard to tell who the good guys are. This isn't the fucking wild west anymore and hasn't been for a long time.

There is no open carry in NY so if you do see someone with their gun out, he's most likely a bad person with a gun.

I have a concealed carry permit but I never take my guns with me. At one point I thought I would want to but then I smartly realized the last thing we need is my ass firing rounds at some other asshole in the middle of the street.

haha

I just realized that the chances of anything ever happening are so darn small. It's not worth the hassle of making sure there's no print on my clothings from my carry or whether it's legal wherever I'm going.  It's a hassle.  I'll rarely take it unless I know we'll be somewhere seedy... like going to my in law's neighborhood :doge

I'm not opposed to them, but I don't own one nor have I ever fired one. The area where I live is pretty hoity-toity and has low crime. Maybe one day I'll purchase one, but not after lots of practice.

I do want to make it over to the local range one of these days and give it a 'shot' (pun intended).

Had a couple rifles that I inherited, I only shot them like once so I sold them at some point in which I was broke. Now that I live in the woods, I could kinda see getting something for protection (from wild life) but eh. We sometimes target shoot with a couple of red ryder BB guns I've had since I was a kid but that hardly counts.

Carrying a gun 40 hours a week, I don't really feel the need to have one after-hours.

I do see the appeal of and have no problem with hunting and sport-shooters.  My family on my mother's side has a long history of hunting.

I'm cool with people who use them for hunting and emphasize gun safety, but the overzealous self-defense/open carry people make me wish guns would just go away forever.

Never saw the need or desire to own one.

I grew up around guns.  They weren't locked away or whatever, they were just out and about, sitting around.  I never once thought about messing around with them; it seemed pretty obvious, even as a little kid, what would happen if you screwed around with guns.

I've always lived in very low crime areas: I could leave my doors unlocked and never have to worry about anyone stealing my shit.

I will probably get a gun someday but not anytime soon.  I don't really think it is some special virtue to not own a gun either.

Shamefully, I bought one gun just as a fun toy a few birthdays ago. And it's a Russian bolt action rifle from WW2 so it's like the chunkiest piece of crap you can get but it looks cool and has history to it and it feels fun to shoot it every several months. It's kept in a locker at a range with the firing pin removed. The combination of communist manufacturing and yuppie TLC makes me treat it like a potential pipe bomb.

I always hated the idea of the general public being able own handguns though since they serve almost no functional purpose unless you're a cop or a criminal.

Oh no I totally enjoy shooting handguns. My point was rifles/shotguns have a use outside of a range like for hunting so since there's sort of a non-recreational use I can understand why it's important to grant access. This goes into cultural reasons for hunting which I have never done but I'll just assume there's no point going into a discussion of the merits. And yes I'm a hypocrite since I would never buy a gun for anything other than satisfying my broner.

But civilian ownership of handguns makes me uneasy since their purpose is to give a way for people to always have the gun on their person and concealed if they're wearing the right clothing. The only people I've seen seriously argue with me about how important their handguns are to them are the types of guys that make me worried they'll be on the news one day for being unhappy with their job/ex-gf.

I think basically all guns including belt-fed ones should be allowed to be rented and shot at a range but the idea that any regular citizen can own a concealable firearm is just not something I've ever heard a great argument for. And considering the vast majority of murders are committed with a handgun, I think a lot of them could have been prevented if we just made it harder to carry a gun around without anyone noticing.

I have absolutely no need for one. And certainly wouldn't like collecting them as some kind of hobby. I'm fine with them for military use or policing action. Otherwise have zero tolerance for them. I wish I lived in one of the societies that had uber strict laws on them.

Yeah, I own around 10.  4 of them are in my apartment, the others are at my parents' place.  I have a CCDW, but don't actively carry.  I enjoy going to the range.  I'm not big on the whole tacticool thing, though I do have a really nice 1911 that makes me drool.

I enjoy going to the range because it's just... freeing.  I dunno.  It's fun to me.  I've never been hunting, I don't think that I would enjoy.  But shooting paper is A+.
