I'm not much for music games but I do love the Miku franchise, obviously. Been playing Project Mirai DX on my lunch break and very nearly finished with all songs cleared on all difficulty levels.

Ouendan/EBA/Gitarooman > Real Music games > Rhythm Tengoku > P4! Dancing>>>> Theatrhythm.

I swear people just like Theatrhythm because of the FF/DQ nostalgia.  I mean it's ok, but I don't think it's a particularly great music game.

as a music game no it's not that great. the patterns aren't that good and don't stick to the melody or rhythm in a consistent way. the music in the game is great tho of course.

also let's not forget the awesome gitaroo man

Isn't Gitaroo Man one of the rarest US PS2 releases? I remember hearing about it a while back but never played. Now that I have a bit more appreciation for rhythm games and this has been a long dry spell for wacky-jappy I'd definitely wanna give it a try.

You can always pick it up on PSP.  PSP version is great, although it's a bit easier (which isn't a bad thing).

Miss that music game arcade experience. Between DDR and the other Bemani games. We scouted a fucking bowling alley so all we could do was play Guitar Freaks/DrumMania. To my memory, they were the only DM/GF machines in the entire city. Those were days. The days of social arcade hopping.  :'(

Was Space Channel 5 ever any good?

Uh, yeah?

Part 2 is the definitive game though.

Mirai is the chibified version for the 3DS, it's a bit easier than the other Miku games (probably for a younger audience)... I'd say the definitive entry is either the arcade game (which is getting a PS4 port soon) or barring that, the first Project Diva F for PS3.

Too late, bought the 3ds one.  Hopefully it's a good entry point.  If I like it enough I'll pick up the ps4 game when it comes out.

I'd like Space Channel 5 more if it didn't think hiding notes under invisibile commands that have to be pressed with completely sudden and arbitrary prompts to actually 100% its stages is good game design.

The rest of it is solid tho.

Space Channel 5 is really fun but I suspect there are issues with control input delay in the PC port. I could never beat it and I'm usually pretty good at rhythm games.

Ok, got Mirai DX and tried my first Miku.  It's alright.  Not negative on it, just Miku songs aren't really my cup o'tea.  Don't really like auto-tune and that's pretty much the songs 100% of the time.  But I'll play through all the songs in normal and then hard to check out them out.  Music games are like crackers, hard to stop when you can just go next song, next song, next song.

So instead lemme talk about how Miku reminds me of why Persona 4 Dancing was fucking awesome and probably my favorite j-music game since Ouendan:

-The songs are really good, there's a lot of good beats to the tracks and the button prompts line up pretty damn well.  Can really get into the songs.
-The Fever time mechanic is awesome.  Making sure you hit the fever turntable spins so that at the climax of the song your BUDDY comes out and together you groove the climax in unison give motivation during a song to hit optional difficulty notes and has great in-song payoff
-The turntable commands tied to the analogue to mix up while you're otherwise just hitting buttons feels really good.  Like it really feels like you're scratching in sync with the song
-The challenge is pretty good, it's tough on hard and when you make it feels good.  Very megaten, very bemani
-The money you get let's you get actually cool outfits/accessories and the dances are fun to watch.  Being able to pick your partner for the fever time and their outfit after first play is nice.
-The remixes of Persona classics are really good (worth saying again)
-Also has very nice sound mix with headphones
-Graphics are pretty awesome too.  Basically get to see P4 characters in P5 visual style

Yeah the game could use a dozen more songs.  Hopefully since the game sold well they'll do another one and heavily increase the song count.  But it's top-notch tunes, with great patterns and it just feels fucking intense and good to play like a great bemani title and you get to dress up Teddy in silly costumes.  Game is just awesome.  After I beat some more Vita games, gonna go back to it and it's totally going to be my to-go music game for trips for the next year or so.

Actually now that I think about it, I think I like the feel of how P4D plays with turntable scratching & beats because it feels similar to Beatmania and I was a big Beatmania fan for a decade or so until they stopped the home releases.  I also dug the DJ Max Portable games quite a bit.  Now I kind of feel like going back and picking those up again...

Actually I like Mirai DX better than DJ Max 3.  Mirai & Persona just feel more fun whereas DJ Max is plain and technical like Beatmania except without the controller.  Also the timing's brutal going back to DJ Max damn.  Miku songs in Mirai are growing on me...... songs are kinda long though and it's like they never shut up with button presses.  There's almost no breaks to just catch your breath and relax.  I like in P4 Dancing there's slow sections to rest between more intense stuff usually.

So I finally got through all of the songs a couple of times in Project Mirai DX.

Pros:
-Jesus fuck, so many songs.  48 songs I think?  Idk, it feels like it never ends and gives a really good overview of Miku & friends music.
-Separate patterns for touch and button controls each with their own difficulty mode patterns.  Looooooots of patterns.  Started with buttons, but switched over to Touch w/stylus because it felt better about halfway.
-A ton of money went into the production values of the game.  So many songs have unique mini-movies.

Cons:
-Patterns are pretty hit & miss.  With so many songs and pattern variations, they must have had a few different employees creating patterns to sync to the music and some were better than others.  A lot of songs are really bad and barely feel like the button presses even go with the music (especially in button mode where there's like 9 notes constantly in a row or something; these songs aren't through the fire and flame), whereas the stuff on the beat are pretty fun to play.  But yeah out of all of the music games I've played, this probably has the worst "sync" of the patterns to the music.  Which is kind of a big deal for a music game.
-The songs go on FOREVER.  Like for the majority of the tracks I'd feel like I'm at the part where the song would end in Beatmania, Ouendan, Persona Dancing and then I look down and I'm only 50-60% through.  Using the full versions of the songs might appease Miku fans, but as a music game, especially considering the songs usually have too many notes and almost no breaks in the songs to rest, the songs are just way too long and overstay their welcome.
-The game favors visually/aesthetic presentation over the mechanics.  The note patterns show up on lines that go in all sorts of shapes and directions with zero consistency and you'll even have times where so many notes will be on a line doing a small circle that notes cover notes and it gets hard to even see what the next notes are.  Sometimes note lines don't appear until a half-second before you have to press.  It's just fairly poor design for a music game to not have any consistency in how the notes appear.

So I'm kind of torn.  You get a ton of music for your buck with Mirai DX, and sometimes when there's a good sync it's a lot of fun.  It's a good journey through the music catalog of Hatsune Miku.  But if you stripped away the Miku and the massive songlist, at its core the music gameplay is really average with mostly mediocre patterns that consist of AAAAAAAAAAAA XXXXXXXX YYYYYYY BBBBBBB a million notes going to a song with a medium BPM that should have 1/6th the note count to match the beat.  I'm glad I played it, but I also wish the developer was better at making music games.

I just finally completed all of the songs in Easy/Medium/Hard in Project Mirai DX so it was fun reading your impressions. I'm not too big on music games so I don't really know much about ideal note placement; truthfully I'm into the Miku series due to the IP, it doesn't hurt there's a decent game on top of it.

I always try to get into these games but don't last too long.  Just not big on the way most of the tracks sound.

Persona 4 Dancing All Night has been the most fun I've had with a music game in a long time.

I'm not saying I'm an expert on note placement or anything, I'm pretty average at music games.  But compared to other music games I didn't feel at all like I could play the game blindfolded by just hitting with the rhythm.  The notes just seemed non-stop sometimes.

Did you play Persona 4 Dancing?  I thought that was really good for the most part.

Also I'm still playing Mirai DX and going through the hard difficulty (which is kind not that hard for the most part compared to other music games higher difficulty) and you know, I think most of my weak patterns music sync issue comes from button mode.  I did about half the game in button mode originally until I discovered touch mode was far more fun and now going back through that first half in touch, the touch patterns are generally good.  I think the priority by the devs was the touch gameplay and the button mode was kind of a throwaway.
