William Merideth had just finished grilling dinner for his family when he saw a drone hovering over his land. So he did what he said any Kentuckian might do — he grabbed his Benelli M1 Super 90 shotgun, took aim and unleashed three rounds of birdshot.

“The only people I’ve heard anything negative from are liberals that don’t want us having guns and people who own drones,” said the truck company owner, now a self-described “drone slayer.” Downing the quadcopter, which had a camera, was a way to assert his right to privacy and property, he said.

The drone was owned by John Boggs, a hobbyist, who told authorities he was trying to take pictures of the scenery. He argues in a lawsuit filed this month in U.S. District Court in Louisville that Merideth did not have the right to shoot the craft down because the government controls every inch of airspace in America.

Can't wait for cryptocurrency and nanomachines to shoot this Lockean nightmare in the head and give us a system restart. :donot

That's a Diamond Age reference, I don't actually believe Dogecoins will liberate mankind from the tyranny of dead white dudes.

So now police won't be choking people to death, it'll be asset forfeiture of the air in their lungs.

Wait, or eminent domain.

But we'll still be able to have tacos delivered by skateboard couriers from the local Mafia-owned Taco Bell, right?

That's cyberpunk, we're post-cyberpunk now that the corporate dystopia imagined by cyberpunk authors has largely come to pass sans the fear of Japan and dingy punk aesthetic. :bolo

Favelas are so cyberpunk they literally set a cyberpunk game in them. Third-world leading the way, even in cyberpunk urbanization. :preach

Is Jefferson's America anything like his Airplane? We don't need to talk about the starship.

All according to keikaku. ✔

Now we need:

-someone to comment on the fact that I used bug and drone in the same sentence #notallinsects

-someone to quote the Firefly opening  ("you can't take the sky from me")

I know it's still early, but that's definitely the best lede I've read all year.

Any drone over a half pound is required to be registered to the FAA. Overreach? Maybe.

When you realize most people flying them have no training, wouldn't you like to be able to find out who was responsible if any of your person or property was damaged by a falling drone?

It was equal parts surreal and completely believable.  :lol
