I just picked up the newest one as well. I'm not sold, so far.

I sure liked that I was able to set up 80% of it by leaving my iPhone next to the base unit though. That was slick as hell.

That's part of it; mine's been buffer city. The internet connection here is, I think, satellite dish-supplied, which is not great.

I would like to say that I really enjoy my AppleTV. Unlike Amazon's shitty streaming app on PS3/PS4 which requires a different region version be downloaded from the store based on the region without saying anything about it (Amazon's API can determine your region from login, but the streaming app is clearly a lowest-bid effort), Netflix uses a universal app across regions and languages and DGAF about hammering out the offerings based on those parameters.

Some jokers are complaining about how Netflix' offerings have diminished, but it's a damned goldmine compared to Amazon.

Between that and Apple being the only content seller that doesn't block my account based on regional IP address, I'm pretty happy.

I am not big on mine.  The remote sucks and I don't have an iPhone, so I can't use that as a remote instead.  I also constantly have problems with certain streaming apps, particularly Hulu, not working correctly and I always have to quit out of the app and restart it to get it working again.  The TV I picked up over the summer has Roku built in and that works so much better.  Definitely plan to ditch the Apple TV and get a Roku player for the living room next go-round.

I have a 4th generation Apple TV and it's a pretty crappy product. The remote is awful and the selection of apps is quite limited.

I prefer using the PS4, if the apps are available there.

I have a 4th generation Apple TV and it is terrible.  Have to constantly restart it and reset it.  Apps constantly buffer.  The one thing that does work fortunately is mirroring my iPhone so I'll stream movies and TV shows through my phone to my TV.  It's the only way I can get anything to actually play without buffering every few seconds.

I've never encountered buffering issues with mine. Some apps have a tendency to crash every now and then. My main gripe is UI/UX issues.

I hated the remote until I learned that tapping on the left/right side shuttles one unit, while swiping shuttles multiple units.

I'm super not fond of the alphanumeric strip they expect you to use for Search functionality, but Siri usually parses what I'm saying faster than I could type, so it's not a deal breaker.

I don't ever have buffering issues on it; any hiccups are caused upstream by my ISP.

My experience is completely anecdotal, I realize.

I recently started using the microphone when searching. It works perfectly in both English and Swedish, but I would still prefer a decent way of typing a text string.

This is a bad answer which further exposes Apple's arrogance, but if you have an iPhone, the Remote.app will automatically recognize when your AppleTV has an input screen, and offer its own keyboard in the phone app. But I refuse to believe that text strip wouldn't be better as 2~3 rows.

I really like my 4th generation Apple TV for the most part. The only thing I don't like is how iTunes TV shows app never seems to update and I have to forcibly quit out of it or occasionally even reboot just to see the latest episode of whatever it is I'm trying to watch. We don't really use it extensively, although having the PBS Kids app is a godsend, given that we kind of live out in the boonies and don't get a good signal. And paying for cable is right out. It's a good device for us simply because we only watch like The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul and Game of Thrones, and it's much cheaper to just buy a season pass/pay for HBO on demand for 2 months rather than pay for cable.

It would be nice to see a better on-screen keyboard, but between the microphone on the remote app and our phones, it's easy enough to get by without having to contend with the crappy alphabet strip, for the most part.

I'm disappointed in it insofar as it feels like it should be able to do so much more. I'd at least like to be able to keep the TV on most all the time and have the screensaver be like a dashboard with all of upcoming appointments, notifications from apps on the AppleTV and my phone, calendar events, etc. I'm sure there's probably some sort of app out there that'll do something like that, but for the most part, AppleTV's app library is pretty lousy. I did manage to get one of my games up there though. The app selection is so lousy that I'm the #2 search result for the word kitten, haha. It's just too bad that getting any advertising in an AppleTV game is borderline impossible unless you develop it from scratch from xcode.

I like it, but the functionality of the remote seems inconsistent sometimes. And sometimes, the remote iOS app doesn’t seem to want to connect. They’re both issues that pop up infrequently enough to not piss me off, but Apple TV in general seems to lack the UX level of polish in other Apple products.

Picked up two Roku Expresses today for $29 each and can get at least $35 for my newest Crapple model.   Bye bye shitty Apple TV ecosystem.

Now that I've had a smartcast tv for a few months, the Apple tv barely gets used anymore. It's only use now is showing pictures and video from our phones.

I love my Apple TV. I find it to be very simple and fast to use. Unlike the Amazon Fire TV. The home menu is super clean and a simple app icon lost. Not full of all "here's a bunch of shit to watch" icons that the Fire tv is. I also find switching through apps to be very quick. Picture quality is amazing usually and the mirroring or casting from my iPhone or iPad is the easier thing ever. It's perfect. I also like how the Apple apps are tied to my account obviously. So it's super easy to switch between devices when playing my podcasts or music. If you have Apple products I feel the Apple TV just works best.

My Vizo M series tv has Chromecast powered casting and I also find that to be pretty great.
