Red Dead Redemption backwards compatible on July 8th
« on: February 07, 2016, 01:47:32 AM »
Although you have to do some tricks to get it.

You basically have to follow someone who has it. View their profile. View what they follow. And then you can get it.

http://kotaku.com/how-to-get-red-dead-redemption-running-on-your-xbox-one-1757542185

I did it so if you are friends with me, you can get it. Only works for Digital versions.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare also works this way apparently but I don't have that one yet.

Update 2/7: Looks like Microsoft has taken measures to ruin everyone’s day. Folks on Twitter are reporting that purchasing and downloading the game for play now brings up puzzle game Hexic, which seems silly. On my end I can no longer start Red Dead Redemption as it’s been flagged as needing an update, but there is an error downloading it (likely because there isn’t really an update) and the game no longer starts.

I got it downloaded before it was taken down. Curious if going offline will let it work.

Today we're happy to announce that Red Dead Redemption will be released as part of Microsoft’s Xbox One Backward Compatibility program this coming Friday, July 8th.

Starting on Friday, every Red Dead Redemption Xbox 360 owner will be able to play the game directly on their Xbox One, regardless of which version of the game they own (Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare and Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition). And for those who have yet to experience it, the game will be available to purchase on Friday from the Games Store on Xbox One.

Undead Nightmare was a standalone title -and- a DLC pack, IIRC. The rest of the DLC updates were all free, and had Achievements.

Do I need to have played Red Dead Revolver to know what's going on in Redemption or is it like the GTA games where it's a completely separate story?

I think you can still launch a private server and then invite friends into it. None of the 'cheevos are tied to public lobbies, and there's no Ranked Leaderboard in the XBL sense.

Zero connection in game world except that it's the same genre. Even the gameplay is substantially different; Redemption is closer to Activision's old GUN title than Revolver.

this game had the same shitty shooting controls as every gta game but every single mission wants you to "drive" and shoot simultaneously. come on, Rockstar.

Relatively speaking for a rockstar game, I didn't think they were bad especially relative to the time. They were an improvement over GTA 4. And the game on default settings has that always generous rockstar auto aim mixed in with a healthy dose of dead eye slo mo.

I've just been playing the story missions due to the achievement where you have to play 21 (!) missions using the same horse. ROFL what a dumb achievement - right up there with GTA4's "speedrun"

I'm playing hardcore mode, and i forgot that that disables auto-targeting. whoops. game would be a lot easier with it enabled.

and im pretty sure that achievement includes side and stranger missions. i got it back when i played the game years ago. and i know i didn't make it that far in the story.

I played it originally without the auto aim also. I agree with you in that I wish Rockstar designed their games without auto aim and just made a solid combat engine like they did with Max Payne 3 but for whatever reason (probably has to do with how broad the appeal GTA games are going for) they don't.

On this play through I'm just going to play with default settings.

Hardcore mode in Red Dead is fine difficulty wise for on foot combat, as long as you don't agitate an entire town and have cover in combat, you won't get your head blown off.

Horse combat is fucked and you need dead eye for the starting weapons. Enemies on horseback have 100% accuracy and can ride faster than any horse in the game, including the war horse you get for owning the GOTY edition. Without dead eye, you need to kill the horse enemies ride on, going for the enemy and missing means they ride up to you and you get murked instantly.

Dead eye items and health items are required on hardcore for horse combat.

As for Rockstar games and auto aim, playing with auto aim defeats the purpose of even playing the games they develop. GTA V is the worse controlling game they've made for shooting, and with how fast you die, it was definitely developed for auto aim above all else.

Since GTA 4, I've played all Rockstar games with the auto-aim off. And while there is something to appreciate in the challenge increase, they still never feel like games that were designed to be played with them off.

With auto-aim off, you generally end up playing super cautious which sucks out that balls to the walls feeling you want to have.

outside of a few missions, hardcore mode isn't hard at all. you just keep a few healing items on hand for those missions where you get swarmed, otherwise it's pretty easy. like vom said tho, there's no shooting up towns. getting the law on you = instant death.

I'm making my way into the Mexico section of the story, and the part where

John works with the President to exterminate towns and turn the women over to be gang raped
[close]

is fucking killing me. it's just so over the top offensive that it doesn't even seem to fit in with the characters personality. gets on my nerves that Rockstar always had to put in at least some amount of ridiculous bullshit like this in their stories.

half the time he has a hard exterior and a heart of gold, half the time he's a heartless killer. the game can't make up its mind

also i wanna know who wrote the civil war story where John leads BOTH SIDES to victory time and time again. like he is the sole force keeping the war going on or something. how did you write that and not realize how stupid it is.

Both of those are horrible. GTA 4's speed-run 'cheevo also counted time during cutscenes, so you also had to skip through those.

I think there was a bug in RDR where the 21 missions with the same horse meant it had to be the first horse you get, to boot. I remember working hard to clear missions with my replacement horse intact, and it never popped.

agreed. shame bc compared to the first part, i liked the characters, visuals, and missions a lot more. the story stuff was poo tho. just got to the third area now; my god the environments in this game are just mind blowing. the colors in every area are just perfect. might be my favorite open world map after Skyrim

The poker game caused my only explosive laughter moment in the entire storyline. "Impasse." Jesus. :lol

The motivation for just about every mission felt wrong to me. The missions themselves were OK, and some of the better-balanced multi maps take place in Mexico.
