someone help me with mame

with emulators coming a long way since the 2000's i assumed (dumbly) that mame would be the same and be simpler to get going. nope. all i want to do is play elevator action II but the damn emu won't let me assign buttons with my stick even in PC (xinput) mode. i have ds4windows open and can get buttons assigned if i hit the same button a billion times to show up right now i can only go right, left, shoot, and jump. even though i assigned other buttons. oy.

put taito legends 2 on steam for the love of god. GOAT game collection.

I always thought it was a "all you jerks want a specific frontend, well, use the one you want, we'll just do the emulator!"
