LAPD very bad at doing investigations

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-knife-found-on-o-j-simpson-property-being-tested-by-lapd-20160304-story.html

In another twist in the long-running O.J. Simpson saga, Los Angeles police are investigating and testing a knife that was reportedly recovered on property once owned by the former football star.

The elite Robbery-Homicide Division is investigating a buck knife now in the department's possession.

The knife was apparently turned over to a police officer a number of years ago by a person doing construction work at the property, a law enforcement source said.

Detectives more recently learned of the knife's existence and are now investigating where it came from, according to the source, who cautioned that the investigation is still in its early stages.

Yup, no continuity of evidence issues there.  Nice works, boys.  ::)

Scary that the killer was at OJ's place as well. Hopefully they can still finally catch the real killer after all this time.

Cuba Gooding isn't a believable OJ. Cuba is playing the same character from Boyz in da Hood.

Plus Cuba Gooding, Jr. has small hands, so the glove will fit.

Lmao, at first I only read the part ronito quoted here, and thought "shitty handling of evidence?  Hmm, what, is the officer with the knife in a fucking traffic unit?"

Then I clicked the link:

Quote
At a news conference at LAPD headquarters Friday morning, Capt. Andy Neiman said the officer was a traffic cop and was working on a movie set when he was given the knife.

I mean, I don't know the stereotype/joke here... but even then: Why would he keep the knife if OJ lived there? You wouldn't think "Hmmm... maybe I should get this tested since he's a suspect..." and not just short-circuit to "Nah, they're just filming a film here, the bloods gotta be fake!"

^OJ isn't a 'suspect', he was found innocent on the criminal charges. The cop only got found out cuz he tapped one of his buddies to find the case number so he could have a plaque made for the case he was going to put it in, so my guess is he would probably try and make a buck off it somehow. I'd imagine there's a pretty broad market for famous crime shit.

There might be a market for it. I remember seeing gum some celebrity spit out cast in plexiglass somewhere (and presumably sold), but I didn't follow up on how common this actually is.

Why are they bothering with this? Any evidence they find won't matter or would be so suspect that any halfway decent lawyer could discredit it.

I thought maybe for further civil suits from the Goldman/Brown families? But he's already in jail for trying to get his shit back cuz he was broke, so there can't be much blood left in that stone.

I mean, I don't know the stereotype/joke here...

It's less a stereotype, than me quickly going "hmm, ignoring the gross incompetence anyway, what sort of officer might be typically oblivious to the importance of chain of custody?  Not any major crime/drugs/homicide/plainclothes officer, obviously....probably not a well-rounded beat cop....aha!  Traffic!   They focus on road safety, write driving infraction tickets that are based solely on their own observations, lay impaired driving charges, again based on their observations and breathalyzer results, lay charges in collisions based on an analysis of the scene at the scene.....not necessarily a lot of exhibit handling requirements in there...."

and then it turns out my snap guess was right.  :lol

In late January of this year, after the cop retired from the LAPD, he contacted a friend who worked in LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division (RHD). The cop told the friend about the knife and said he was getting it framed to put on his wall. He wanted his friend to get the DR (Departmental Record) number for the Nicole Brown Simpson/Ronald Goldman murder case, which he planned on engraving in the frame.

It's the LAPD. You're putting too much faith into them doing that. :lol
