It's an election year, so I'd like to do a bit of  :snob reading. I'm starting off with Rick Perlstein's Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus. I haven't read Nixonland, but I enjoyed Invisible Bridge.

What are some other books that worth reading? I'm kinda interested in the Dixiecrat revolt at the '48 DNC and also the rise of the Religious Right, but I'll accept any suggestions

This book discusses the "plantation mentality" that is causing Americans to become co-dependent. It is historical however does look at the authors personal journey from a Berekely militant to a conservative businessman.

Not strictly, mainly I'm just looking for books about important points in 20th Century American political history.

Tell Newt To Shut Up!

It covers the clash between Gingrich's congress and Clinton's white house, mostly from the Republican side.  Obviously a bunch of parallels to the Boehner/Obama/Tea Party shenanigans.

You definitely wanna read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, then. I'd recommend Boys on the Bus, too.

This feller has wrote a series of sorts:

He also has a 1932 one but half of it's about Hitler's election/seizing of power and the other half is about a future fascist dictator.
