Mario Maker looks kinda neat, until you realize that since this is Nintendo there's no easy way to browse user created shit because lol Nintendo

Also, while it looks neat, it's the sort of thing I could only really get into if I didn't have a job and just wanted to sloth it up on a couch for like 3-4 weeks. I kind of miss being able to do that shit.

Bayonetta 2 is the only 3rd party game that comes to mind.

If you're a Nintendo stan then it has some of the best games in their respective series.

If not then not really.

I enjoy the Wii U for what it is.

Xenoblade and Bayonetta 2...

I'm getting that Fire Emblem Atlus game when it comes out.

So not a total loss.

Was there ANYTHING worth playing on this system?

- Super Mario 3D World is the best Mario game since Galaxy 2
- Mario Kart 8 is my favorite Mario Kart
- Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is one of the best 2D sidescrollers I've played
- Splatoon is a fun if not simple release.  Great new concept from them
- Mario Maker is great if you like that sort of thing
- Bayo 2 is Bayo 2

That's honestly about it.

It's a fun little system with those games, and I enjoy it for what it is, but its far from my most used console

As always a segment of cool unique exclusives but never enough to make me actually ever consider buying one. I'll wait for the inevitable emulation scene for it down the road.

I did think the gamepad was cool.

This system does have a decent little number of good games.  But I wonder if it will be worth going back to; wouldn't be surprised to see all the good stuff get ported to NX.

I think I've played WiiU more than any other current-gen console. Xenoblade X, Mario 3D World, Smash, Mario Kart, Mario Maker, Bayo 2, NES Remix 1 and 2, and Shovel Knight (since it was the first system the game came out on). Probably Nintendo's best 1st party lineup since the SNES days. Was sorely lacking in the Japanese 3rd party exclusives, which is a bit surprising since there were quite a few good ones on original Wii (and of course all the portables), that's my biggest disappointment with the system.

Couldn't the same thing be said after the GC ? But yeah I doubt they can repeat that. There's still a fairly big niche for them but it seems to be destined to retract if they insist on doing their own thing outside of current paradigms.

But who knows ? PS4 isn't doing insanely good either, maybe there's a void to fill. Portable & Amiboos may carry them through once more.

Nintendo home console sales have been in steep decline since SNES.

Wii is clearly an outlier.

think it's something like

NES 80 mil
Snes 60 mil
N64 40 mil
Wii 100 mil
Wii U 15 mil

Maybe so, but I think Nintendo made the right call to not chase the parity dragon, even if that meant living off from only their own portfolio. I'm obviously not an insider or an analyst but in the end the question is not dominance but sustainability, and it is possible they may achieve that even with a minority share.

I'd agree if their install base wasn't plummeting like this, also on handhelds, which has been their real cash cow.

Well obviously, what the WiiU did was not enough and portables may become an issue. But I think we can be pretty certain that there's no way they would have struck gold like they did with Wii if they tried to level with the PS360, something which would have probably had a ton of game development costs attached on top (and a much more thin profit margin).

Let's be honest, Nintendo will still live many years as a sustainable company even if they should exit the hardware business bar catastrophic events or decisions.

I don;t even think the whole Wii U thing was an entirely bad idea, just very poorly executed.

If the tablet controller was actually a portable and fully functional tablet it would have been a great thing to give kids.

The WII got what it deserved. It was a gimmick and that gimmick got people to buy it and Wii sports or whatever. Anybody who expected anything else is fucking insane.

I don't want to waggle my fucking way through Metroid.

RE4 on Wii was godtier with the controls.

I really liked the Wii for what it was.

Hopefully motion will get a second life now with PSVR.

Have you played Sin and Punishment 2? Probably the most sublime use of the Wii controls ever, and a damn great game.

I've been meaning to get s&p2 for a while now but my wii disc drive makes this loud annoying noise that i haven't fixed yet so i haven't played it in a while.

Since the NES was released, no console had ever sold less than 50 percent of it's predecessor.

The WiiU sold less than 15 percent of the Wii.

Is that really a fair comparison considering what an insane juggernaut the Wii was hardware sales wise? That thing was nigh impossible to obtain in stores for months. My young nephew has a Wii U and digs it, figure he's about the right audience for a N machine being in the single digits and all.

the original Wii is a real anomaly if you're comparing with other gaming console hardware sales. It wasn't a console, it was a faddish piece of kit like Tickle Me Elmo or something. At least it had some cool games. I'm probably never going to buy a WiiU. There's like, 2 games I want to play on it. 3 if you count Earthbound on VC

The Genesis probably sold that much more than the Master System (in the US)?

Hell you can get Earthbound on 3DS. I played plenty of games on my Wii U though. Definitely worth the cost for me

The Wii U was alright at best.  Nintendo killed its potential by underpowering it so much that you could only have one tablet hooked up to the system at one time.  Had it been able to have 2-4 tablets, the outcome likely would have been a lot different.

I think going with a Wii 2/Super Wii/Wii HD approach would have done a lot better.  The Wii fad ended in 2010 but there would have been enough repeat customers to get an upgrade.  It wouldn't have been 100 million like the Wii but 30-40 million would have been likely.  Then again, Nintendo was hoping that the tablet gimmick would have brought it past those numbers anyway :teehee

Also the software wasn't very compelling.  No new Zelda on it, 3D World was far inferior to the Galaxy games, Mario Kart was pretty good but other else than that, it felt like Nintendo didn't give much of a shit.  You could tell that since 2014, they were waiting for the right time to kill it so they can move on.

Bayonetta 2 and um... uh... um... Mario Kart? I guess? *BritneySpearsTryingToSmilePolitely.gif?*

Since the NES was released, no console had ever sold less than 50 percent of it's predecessor.

The WiiU sold less than 15 percent of the Wii.

Woah, what? I thought after like the SNES Nintendo was "successful" but not selling super well past the N64. Wii being the super exception but like it'd be:

SNES > N64 > NES > Gamecube > Wii U in regards to sales.

WiiU is the first N home console I've not owned so far. :-[

If Persona Q wasn't on the 3DS, I'd probably have neither "current" Nintendo hardware. It doesn't help that Capcom's lack of a retail Ace Attorney series post the DS releases haven't really engendered wanting to purchase digitally on Nintendo's ancient online systems with no account-tied paper-trails for me.
