Clash Royale (ios/android)
« on: March 29, 2016, 02:16:20 AM »

Fun addicitive. Give it a shot. Somebody make a Bore Clan.

Competitive 1 v 1 real time tower defense game with different units.

Yes its f2p with those f2p obnoxious energy system hooks. It's still fun.

I've been playing since launch. I'm not very good, because I have a lot of cards but still can't bust through the 1200-1300 range (Arena 4).

I prefer to play aggressively, so that leaves me open to counters.

I think my current loadout is this: Hog, Rocket, Spear Gobs, Musketeer, Baby Dragon, Rage, Witch or Barbs(depends on my mood).

I'm really impressed with the design of the game and the idea of it. It's the perfect style of game that honestly wouldn't exist on any other format. It would be deemed to simple on consoles or PC but its got a perfect little design for a platform outside of those parameters.

If the f2p model wasn't so odious, I have a feeling it would be getting a lot more attention and praise around mainstream gaming circles. You can bet there will a shitload of clones of this.

Thanks for making this thread! I am playing it pretty compulsively right now. I was feeling proud of my 600+ rating right now, and then ToxicAdam waves his big penis around and I'm less willing to show off.  :-[

The design of this game is pretty darned smooth. I find myself playing even when I don't get a Chest benefit, because it's fun. Possibly the first F2P on iOS I can say appeals to me as a gamer rather than an OCD sufferer.

Not so sure. You need some bank to host servers that can provide live matches 24/7. Most knockoff companies don't want to put out that much money.

But, it wouldn't surprise me to see a company like EA wedge one of their franchises (PvZ?) into a game like this down the road.

Hah. Don't sweat it, the ranking system is a bit rigged, in that you will always 'hit a wall' where players easily out-value you (either by the strength of their towers or their troops) or they will have access to better cards/tactics. That's more of a product of paying/playing more.

But in the same vein, you will slowly creep up the ladder based on that fact, regardless of how good or bad you may be.

There is a whole breed of those f2p games on mobile that exist more as time waster fillers rather than actual games. I mean you can spend time on them and battle other places and invade other cities but really the "game" doesn't feel like anything I would term a game. It's just going down progression tables. This one is actually a game.

Yeah, just so.

In related news, I was doing pretty well today, lots of pretty close matches and a few 3-crown wins -- and then I GOT SMEARED.

Seriously, I'm going to watch the replay a few times, because I still have no idea how I got owned so badly.

No Bore clan yet.

The smart thing about this game, just like Hearthstone, is that you can keep playing 24/7, just the rewards are timed.

In "theory" you can play 24/7 but the reality is that you will hit a wall fairly quickly where you can't win on a consistent basis because you need leveled up cards or better cards or leveled up towers. There is a benefit to leveling because access to cards is gated by arenas (Trophy Level). But once you hit certain arenas you will be there for a while potentially as you get your daily chests  and such. Don't let that bother you. There is a rhythm to how you progress. So yeah you can play as much as you want and especially early on its useful to understand how to play and play alot but after awhile you'll figure out when its more in your benefit to put in the time and progress tiers based on your cards. Basically you play until you can't consistently win anymore which is a sign that you need to grind chests to level up the cards you have and get new cards.

I'll start a bore clan if people are going to actively play. You need people to actively be involved in a clan to get cards otherwise its kind of a waste. One other tip. Don't use your green gems to speed unlock chests or buy chests. Convert them to gold coins. Everyday you can buy individual cards and they change daily. So its better to save your green gems/gold coins to buy the individual cards you need/want.

Based on your cards you can look up decks kind of like in hearthstone.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ClashRoyale/comments/479rfc/pushing_deck_guide_for_all_arenas/

I basically use this deck currently until I unlock more cards to give me more options and its still easily viable at 800 trophy level. There are other decks of course based on what you have. Just look on reddit clash royale on the side bar to the right or youtube or other sites. Or come up with your own strategy of course.

One tip I can share that isn't really intuitive when you start out:

When placing down units, depending on where you place them, you may see !! marks above the incoming enemy. This means they will attack that unit. You can use this to your advantage to draw enemies into the middle of the board (where your towers and castle will make quick work of them). This is especially effective against units like Prince (horseback guy) and Mini Pekka (little robot of destruction).

Yeah I definitely see that alot but I somehow fail at doing it myself. Need to practice on it more. Do you just drop them in the center or in between the center and a tower?

As you are dragging the units around the playboard to place down, you will see how far away from the path you can place them and still draw the attention of the Prince (or whatever) because they will have an exclamation mark over their head.

It's better to draw them to the middle (and closer to the castle and not the river), because then they have to go back to the path which further increases their exposure to tower fire.

Well, if you think about it, the 80's arcade games (we old people grew up on) have more in common with what you find on IOS then the games that are considered AAA console games.

There is that and that simple addictive games like this use to be more common. This is almost the type of game I would have grown up playing on the home consoles or computer games of the past. Not in genre but in sort of simple design concept with relatively little focus on the graphics but lots of focus on the design. (minus the f2p elements)

Hut decks are annoying. Sadly the best counter is to use rockets to take multiple huts or to slowly grind them out to a draw.

I can't stand baby dragons, they're so difficult to counter. They're flying so not a whole lot can actually attack them. Their attack is an AOE so you can't whittle them down with a bunch of smaller units. And they have a ton of HP so you can't burn them down quickly.

I played this for a couple weeks when it launched but the ceiling til you hit p2w level is so low that I bounced pretty quick. Once you get the the point where each chest takes 8-12 hours to open, there's not much reward to playing after you get the crown chest whether you win or lose. The timers on every unlockable really hinders the illusion of progress.  I got to the third or fourth battleground and a frustrating amount of matches ended in no-crown stalemates. I'll load it up again if someone here starts a clan though

Clan is started, but I'm in the 2nd battlefield and only have 600 crowns, so it's not like you'll be getting a ton of traded Epic cards from me any time soon.

Hut Decks need a nerf.

Quote
Big Army Beatdown
Goblins
Spear Goblins
Bomber
Barbarians
Giant Skeleton
Goblin Hut
Barbarian Hut
Arrows
Strength in numbers is the name of the game here. Not only do you have cards that are cost efficient to your Elixir, but you also summon many units to the field with each play. You want to be able to overwhelm your opponent with a continuous stream of new units entering the battlefield. Both the Goblin and Barbarian huts are great for keeping your numbers high, as well as each of the separate cards themselves for summoning more units.

Your biggest issue is when your opponent plays cards that affect a wide area, defeating most of your weaker units. To prevent this, always keep another card on hand to counter with in case you see a Fireball or Arrows played. The Giant Skeleton is your main tank of the deck, which can deal damage to all units and drops a bomb when defeated. However, you can substitute this with other cards like the Prince or even a Witch if you want to keep a big number of units on the field. But if you want the extra push of strength for your big army, keep the Giant Skeleton.

Just got through trying this one from here.

http://www.ign.com/wikis/clash-royale/Arena_3_-_Best_Deck_Builds

Man that shit is mindless. I went from  600 to 900 trophy level immediately. Didn't lose a match. It's so easy that its not even fun. I'm sure its easier to counter when you have certain cards in your deck. But if you aren't prepared you just get worked. It's like getting stung to death by a million ants. I refuse to make that my main deck for now. You feel like an asshole playing that way.

Is everyone just waiting on the timers for the chests? Or whats the strategy to get around the ftp aspect of it?

Already spent some cash, but I do that for all of these games that I feel deserve it to an extent

I mean I play all the time but it is inevitable that you will hit a wall at some point and need to grind some chests. At that point I tend to just play to get my chests for timer unlocks and then the matches to get my free daily crown chest. Convert your gems to coins also and just buy the cards you need with coins. The available cards for sale via gold coins change daily.

I've definitely gotten better as I play more. I use to get nervous and just aggressively throw out shit but now I can play more slowly and pick the proper counters and be aggressive more when I need to be. Also learning what properly counters what is an on going process.

I've learned (but haven't truly learned) that when I go on an amazing run I should stop when I'm ahead. I got up to like 1350 or so yesterday and felt like a boss. I should have called it quits. Lost a few times. Started rejiggering my deck on the fly. Went on tilt. And then lost like three hundred points.

I know I should stop when I hit one of those losing skids because you're mad and not thinking properly but its so hard to stop. You don't want to lose ground which only ends up making me dig a deeper hole.

Yea, it's especially painful when you are in freefall and you get matched up with people 100-150 trophies below you and then you lose to them and lose 37+ trophies. Ouch.

That was quite probably the most exciting video of two seated nerds using tablets ever.

Lots of good strategy; sadly, I am not even close to having those cards yet. The gradual introduction of complexity is really one of the game's strong suits though, so I shouldn't rush.

I suck at adjusting to new metas. I lost my first 5 games now that I don't have bomb tower to fall back on.

I basically have to lose to something 10 times before I figure out it's a strong strategy I need to employ.

Same. I've been up to 1800 and then down to 1350's recently. Sometimes its like everyone you play just has a hard counter for what you are trying to do. I've almost uninstalled the game sometimes not because I don't enjoy it, but because I suddenly feel I stink.
