To correct what I said in the other thread, Le Monde (one of the newspaper involved) said that not all papers have been yet made public and that the public database for those will be progressively updated. Not all documents have been analysed but there's already 9 months of investigations going into that week's articles.

Overall I think this kind of effort is a good way for newspaper to stay relevant on top of it being a good thing overall.

So without too much surprise, there's mentions of :

- Bribe money for Algerian oil and gas.
- Assad's regime extended family and local tycoons had offshore companies that may have helped going around the embargo.
- Morocco's monarchy has a lot of offshore assets.
- A collection of dignitaries from Africa (including Kabila's twin sister).

The map I was mentioning earlier :

Well Wikileaks cables detailing regime corruption were one of the precipitating causes of the Tunisian revolution, and later the whole Arab spring. So there's definitely a historical precedent to people flipping out because of stuff like this.

It seems like a small enough/flexible enough country to mosey along after a government reshuffle considering how quick they snapped out of the default/inflation shit just 8 years ago.

Also on the French front, Le Monde is a partner in the Panama Papers operation. There's a number of french usual suspects in there :

- Mr. Cahuzac, former socialist secretary of state for budget (and thus in charge of tax evasion hunting  :lol ) who had to step down a few years ago for suspicion of tax evasion.
- Patrick Balkany, right wing mayor of rich Levallois Perret (city on the outskirts of Paris), implicated in a couple decades in various embezzlement affairs (but still voted in by his constituency :yeshrug ) a long time associate of the cabal of right wing politicians in the Hauts de Seine (richest county in France) which included Pasqua and former president Sarkozy.
- Mr. Guérini, biggest socialist politican in Marseille, himself considered pretty bad for years even for the most whack city in France.
- The Le Pen family and some of their associates in the Front National far right party. Not too surprising as Le Pen senior built his own personal fortune in part in "confusing" the destination of some of the successions left by rich faithful in their will (for the party).
- André Guelfi aka "Dédé the sardine" former shadow broker for french oil (in the ex-USSR) and Bernard Tapie which is a sort of french equivalent to Donald Trump (millionaire "self made man" who made every company he touched shit, including the large Crédit Lyonnais bank and Adidas, brief stint as minister of the city and urban development, famous for being loud and obnoxious). Apparently after sharing a cell in the nineties they had an offshore venture together...

Chinese censors have stepped up their censorship of websites, ordering all content related to the Panama Papers to be scrubbed as new revelations emerged of how relatives of some of the country’s top leaders had used secretive offshore companies to store their wealth.

Documents from the leaked Mossack Fonseca database showed the relations of three of the seven members of the Communist party’s elite ruling council, the politburo standing committee, had companies that were clients of the offshore law firm. They included relatives of Chinese president Xi Jinping.

More than £170bn of UK property is now held overseas. Much of that is in London, where unprecedented house price inflation has transformed homes into highly profitable investments for asset speculators. Nearly one in 10 of the 31,000 tax haven companies that own British property are linked to Mossack Fonseca.

Just days after dismissing the revelation that his late father managed an offshore fund, calling it a "private matter," British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday admitted to having profited from the very same fund. According to Cameron, he sold his investments for £31,500 (around $44,300) before becoming Prime Minister.

The structures in this case aren't incredibly useful to American taxpayers due to the taxation of worldwide income so you really shouldn't expect much fallout here. There's a push to increase reporting requirements as a result of the revelations, which doesn't sound sexy, but things like that are really important to catch unreported income.

In countries that are dumb and tax territorially? Well they're already enthralled to international capital, hence their territorial tax regimes.

Funnily enough, Wikipedia says the quote is a likely paraphrase of this actual Steinbeck quote:
Quote
Except for the field organizers of strikes, who were pretty tough monkeys and devoted, most of the so-called Communists I met were middle-class, middle-aged people playing a game of dreams. I remember a woman in easy circumstances saying to another even more affluent: 'After the revolution even we will have more, won't we, dear?' Then there was another lover of proletarians who used to raise hell with Sunday picknickers on her property.

I guess the trouble was that we didn't have any self-admitted proletarians. Everyone was a temporarily embarrassed capitalist. Maybe the Communists so closely questioned by the investigation committees were a danger to America, but the ones I knew—at least they claimed to be Communists—couldn't have disrupted a Sunday-school picnic. Besides they were too busy fighting among themselves.

I do remember a specific one, but I didn't look for it. If MAF is around, he probably remembers it, too. It was from her 18th or 21st birthday or something, and she was getting out of a car or limo, and it looked like there was a big jizz stain on the inside of one of her legs.
