Looks like a wildfire. They've been having them often. California and parts of Florida have them now and then as well.

Edit: Per Twitter:

"All of Fort McMurray ordered to flee wildfire in the largest fire evacuation in Alberta's history"

Yeah. Figured seeing the image with the flames jumping between the trees.

#hottake from slate here, blaming climate change like the alarmist SJW they are. but it also has some real neat photos/vids and it mentions that there have been no reported deaths, which is also nice.

I have two troopmates who are in Fort Mac.

They posted that they are safe, but obviously busy working to help with the evacuation.

Just saw an interview a BBC report on this and they were interviewing an RCMP officer who mentioned the fires were nearing some oil storage facilities that, if they went off, would have a blast radius of 14 km.

I pitched in a few bucks USD (which is like millions in CAD) to help out. Fire's are no freaking joke when they can't be contained.

He was just in time. At 2:30 you see those houses on the right starting to have their yards, and presumably the house itself, start to burn.

It's crazy how far a blaze like that can jump. I would have thought the street to be enough of a barrier.

Well with more fires popping up each day and firefighters unable to contain the blaze due to weather conditions this is gonna burn a lot longer. The temps in the 80s arent helping nor is the wind.

Fire is scary as shit, its the embers and ash that spread the fire even further causing more fires. One minute you're ok next you're surrounded.

It’s not immediately clear when the wildfires will be extinguished, but some estimates place it at months. And given its unpredictable nature, it could be a while before oil production returns to normal in northern Alberta.

They lost 700mil worth of production in just 3 weeks.  This is going to hit really hard economically.

The distance between the fire and the Habs is greater than the distance from London to Afghanistan.

I can still hope right?

Losing the Lightning or the Canucks wouldn't be so bad either...

this blog is v good, also the comment thread is worth reading. especially the connections between the forest fire in alberta, the forest fire(s) in siberia/eastern russia and what is happening to the arctic streams as the general temperature rises

...Is this, like, your first wildfire? This will not be contained until the fall if no rain (and by this I mean HEAVY rain) contains it. They'd literally have to go into the Great Lakes (or whatever is closer) and start dumping by air to contain it.

When the fire was first detected it was four acres, they had four water tankers on it within a couple hours. Its now over a million acres.
