it would be difficult to believe that Kojima would call such attention to it ... if it weren't somehow relevant to his upcoming, "edgy" PlayStation game.

New game will largely have an impenetrable storyline told through extensive cutscenes, will be filled with kojimafied versions of clichéd western action heroes, and inappropriately sexualized female lead characters (nonplayable). (no homo-ludens)

From coming up with an idea to assembling a team, you really need about a year to prep, he explained. “Currently, we have a webpage and a logo and are in a temporary workspace.” Setting up the basic studio infrastructure takes time, and Kojima Productions is still in its hiring and setting up shop phase. That doesn’t mean Kojima has ceased creating.

Famitsu asked if he had come up with a design plan for his game. “It’s a great game,” Kojima replied. “Currently,” he continued, “I’m coming up with the plot, the characters and the game system and whatnot. Since there are substantially new elements [in the game concept], we have to test and try things out. It’s not like I’m just thinking about this in my head. While we’re testing things, I’m having Shinkawa draw characters and rough illustrations.

Is the US-based studio Konami built for him decimated now, or is it only soon-to-be-decimated?

I can't imagine Konami keeping it running, but I'm sure it's closed. Seeing as how there was much concern over who would run upkeep on MGS Online 3.

Either way I expect his new game to be full of Kojimaness, but since it won't be tied down to a tired series I'm interested.

I've spoken with people who worked there. After Konami dumped Kojima everyone who hadn't already bailed out, left. The only people who were still there were a couple of people to keep the servers for MGSV online still running.

It's kind of insane considering how big, new and nice that studio is and the fact that it is in a super desirable new location as well.

Working for Konami in Japan is one of the worst fates which can befall a game developer. They're hyper-paranoid about losing control over their employees, using changing email addresses to prevent them from being poached by recruiters, and there are security cameras in the halls to keep an eye on their own employees.

I think the USA studio would never stand within Konami's structure, and could only exist within Kojima's shield.

Yeah, at least one instance of a programmer or designer being demoted to janitor. I do think though that Konami's "recent" decay has been vastly overstated*, when I listened to the interview of the guy who did the translation for MGS1 (an American working for Konami in a completely unrelated field formerly), you got the impression it was already a pretty tightly controlled affair even in the late nineties, bordering on suffocating. Maybe Konami was or has become worse but we all know that's pretty par for the course for a lot of those big japanese videogames companies (and the industry at large, outside of the japanese peculiarities, is not much better) even if they're at the bottom of that spectrum. The fear of developers being poached was already the rationale for not crediting people by name in the early years, or so I've read.

* We've seen all over the japanese industry the same struggling with the bloating of AAA budgets and requirements, the loss of diversity and most of the catalog being shelved in favor of only the safest projects, the same exodus to mobile or pachinko, the same rush to promote some internal big names/devs to keep it afloat and often the same subsequent burning of said stars.

Their last 2 YGO games have actually been pretty damn good. I bought Millenium Duels PS3 last year and had a lot of fun, so hopefully they continue to make those.

I mean it is fine. It is just generic and not worth much discussion or thought or hype.

If it's only a mascot or a logo : it's too complicated & elaborate.
