Star Ocean 5
« on: June 08, 2016, 02:35:16 PM »

Only 3 weeks left until US release,  and that's my summer vacation game right there.

Battle system looks pretty slick, and the story cant possibly be worse then Star Ocean 4 shitfest.

I can't image what it must be like to be an adult who is excited about a jrpg.

At first I smirked, then I remembered that I'm excited for Persona 5.

Still really looking forward to it even though I'm a bit disappointed by the fact it's only about 25 hours long.

25 h seems like a good length. Most RPGs outstay their welcome.

That's actually a big plus in my book.  Rpgs are way too padded and these days I greatly prefer shorter rpgs.

What I'm concerned about with SO5 is more the fact that it all takes place on one planet again.  Why the fuck is Star Ocean even a sci-fi series when every game in the series is going to keep being a generic medieval fantasy world.  I really have no idea what Tri-ace is thinking with the series.  Otoh, their Exist Archive was actually a pretty good no budget short story game, so Tri-ace still has it, they just keep going in the wrong direction with SO.  But it doesn't really matter since this will be the final entry since SO5 bombed like hell in Japan.

It's pretty lonely. I messaged a girl on OKCupid who talked about Okage the Shadow King on her profile and she didn't even look at my profile.

Yeah I just bought Tales of Possibly Gay Angels or whatever for PS4 a few weeks ago and after like 4 or so hours I don't think I'm even to the second real town yet. That's like a 1/4 of a casual play through of Chrono Trigger or half way through Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter.

this is disappointing, but at this point it's been going on for so long that it's in a class with "why is it called final fantasy if they keep making sequels"

Star Ocean 5 is the very definition of an average game. It doesn't have some of the really awful stuff that's been a problem in some of previous entries in the series, but nothing at all stands out either. The combat tutorial talks a lot about strategy, but you can basically just spam special attacks in almost every battle. The graphics are alright, better than a lot of JRPGs, nothing special. The characters aren't too bad, but there's barely any characterization at all. The story feels really bare-bones so far, and what is there is just standard JRPG stuff and two kingdoms at war. The cities mostly look pretty good at first glance, but they're super small. The bulk of the sidequests are handled through a message board, so you don't even get any interaction with NPCs for them. There's a lot of just running back and forth between various locations. It all just feels like they made sure to check off all the boxes on the list, but then didn't bother to go beyond that.

All in all, I'd rather just be playing Star Ocean 2 right now.

Yeah, that's how I feel about SO5 so far. The graphics look pretty nice, music is decent if you're into Sakuraba, leveling up the Roles system is neat. But it feels very uninspired and shortcuts were taken everywhere. 12 hours in and the story is bare-bones with minimal character development, and there are barely any cinematics, mostly just standing around or "walk really slow while people talk to you like a western game". The best (worst) was when you had to escape a lab before it exploded, then you get teleported up into the spaceship and watch a small 2 second clip on a monitor in the spaceship of the lab exploding.

It's not nearly as bad as people say. Has a lower metacritic score than Suikoden IV which was the last RPG I played that I felt was truly awful.

There's nothing outright offensive about it until the difficulty spikes hit later with a few boss battles, but yeah it's absolutely a pass with all the JRPGs on the horizon / TMS.

I actually like Suikoden IV okay, probably more so than this.

Is this the game with the awful looking pink haired animu girl?

Nah, you're thinking of Final Fantasy XIII.
